Schwinn Meridian 7speed trike Chain issues

Greetings to all,

Ive recently acquired a shiny new red Schwinn meridian 7 speed trike. After a week of attempted riding i've had an issue with the secondary drive chain coming off the chain ring. After several attempts to adjust tension and double checking the alignment of the gears same issue continues. upon close scrutiny of the front secondary drive gear i can see that it is moving front to back when the hub is spinning. this indicates to me that the gear was pressed off center when it was made. any suggestions oh a fix for this. i cannot return it to the store as this was a gift from a non profit to my son so there is no receipt. this definitely is a brand new bike. I have reached out to " Schwinn support" but without proof of purchase there's no warranty work to be had.

Please advise.

Thanks P.

I would post this in the Bicycle Mechanics sub-forum.

You don't have the chains adjusted too tight do you? There needs to be some slack in them.

On a lot of bikes you'll see gears not moving perfectly concentric about the axis. And it's perfectly fine. Bikes are not built to be precision pieces of machinery that many expect. What's too much? Hard to say. But just because you can see it doesn't mean it's too much.

Welcome to BF.

PS. Have you ask the non-profit about whether they can give you proof of the purchase. Technically you.. or your son are the first owner if the bike was bought for you or him.

While I've learned that every chain derailment problem has a cause and a solution, I've rarely been able to solve one without looking at the bike and watching the chain roll through the cogs in slow motion. If you can't submit some photos or a video, I suggest taking the bike to a local shop who are more dedicated to solving problems than acting like snobs. Call around to see who will look at it. I've fixed dozens of trikes, recumbents, perambulators, trailers, cargo bikes, wheelchairs, and adaptive cycles that other shops wouldn't touch.
