Why...

...do many (most?) pics posted here show bikes with their pedals removed?

(Not that I have a compelling need to know why, but it's been bugging me for long enuf I thought I'd ask, see what the various opinions might hold.)

XxHaimBondxX 12-02-23 07:48 AM

My guess they have one set of pedals for many bikes, plus it's easier to store bikes.

Yeah that last was my first thought, or if new it allows eventual purchaser the freedom of mounting their own personal preference. That'd be in line with your first guess... I guess. Thnx!

Road bikes are generally sold without pedals as everyone has their own preference.

(Admitting I haven't bought but the one back since April '72) I can understand that logic. Thnx!

I don't seem to see a lot of bikes posted without pedals. Maybe it's time for a "Show Your Bike Without Pedals" thread. We have them for every other photo opportunity.

Why . . . . . not?

(Why . . . . . do folks make a post with an incomplete title?)

Do they? Seems unlikely.

Here's a recent thread with a fair number of bike pics. All of them have pedals.

https://www.bikeforums.net/general-c...road-bike.html

If the picture was of a bike being sold, it wouldn't be unusual that the pedals weren't on.

staehpj1 12-02-23 10:08 AM

Yeah, only one here and there. Not "many (most?)". As was mentioned bikes for sale it makes sense since folks want their pedal of preference. Otherwise pretty much all pictures I see have pedals.

Not much has changed since 1972. I don’t think you have missed very much.

For some reason you must be seeing more of the pictures of bikes that are for sale or copy/pasted pic's from the brands website. Most new bikes are sold without pedals and likely many used bikes that have other than plain pedals and are for sale will have the pedals removed as the seller likely will use those on their new bike. There are enough variations in the types clipless pedals that they'll likely be useless to the new owner if they have a different type of clipless pedal.

I don't know that I see a majority of bikes with or without pedals on the site. Maybe you can do a count for us of how many pics have pedals and how many don't. It'd be useful to sum it up by year posted and maybe if you do it by months, then we can see if there is some cycle they com in... no pun intended (I think).

+1.

I challenge the OP to prove the premise of his thread. Until he does, I have to give this thread a solid grade of D-.

Pedals are a very contentious and emotional topic which creates serious arguments and debates. Maybe that's why people remove them so that they can avoid having somebody lecture them and tell them that their pedals are wrong.

I bet that of all the pics I have seen on this site, only 5% lack pedals.

kap 7 12-02-23 01:49 PM

They do that to reduce weight of the bike much faster ride

Hmmm... good point.

Gains credence given some of the replies this thread's provoked.

Must be a slow news day besides being too cold to ride in a number of places.

icemilkcoffee 12-02-23 02:50 PM

Most new bikes are sold without pedals so you can put your own preferred pedals on there.
The real question is why they don’t do the same with saddles.

It's right up there with "topics not to bring up at Thanksgiving"...politics, religion, pedal choice.....

Or components.

Why?” ,<- the eternal question

Why not” <- the eternal answer

If there ever was a first world problem, this one rates in the top ten.

Technically the thread is from 2019 it got zombied I believe. Though titanium bikes are neat so cannot complain too much.

Generally a new bike is shown without pedals and if a road or mountain bike comes with pedals they are test ride pedals designed purely for being able to test ride the bike not for actual riding when you own it. The one complete new bike I bought got the pedals replaced immediately.

alcjphil 12-02-23 08:08 PM

Pedals are not important. I have had pedal spindles implanted into my feet. No need for pedals at all

This. It worked with my kids, and it works with my grand kids. :)
