I was in London for a week in 2019. I rode the streets and didn’t find it so dangerous. I was impressed by how many Londoners commute by bike. I also rode the Thames Path southwest of downtown…mostly right along the riverbanks. It’s a packed crushed stone surface, but pretty smooth. Nice surroundings, and plenty to look at. I rode a bike with mountain bike style tires, but a road bike would probably be ok, or a gravel bike. — Dan

For fairly obvious reasons I haven't tried renting a bike in London.
But google shows some interesting schemes, eg.
https://fatllama.com/search?hierarch...391&query=bike

But there's also a ****** you could ask on: https://www.******.com/r/londoncycling/

If you just want to pedal a bike from A to B there's Boris Bikes (Santander officially), they're currently made by Pashley but do weigh about 50 lbs
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santander_Cycles

If you time it right there's also London Naked Bike Ride (Saturday June 8th 2024).
https://wnbrlondon.uk/
https://londoncheapo.com/events/london-naked-bike-ride/

Edit: Forgot about the r e d d i t ban - you can fill in the missing word yourself.

road.cc has multiple daily columns (e.g., Live Blog and Near Miss of the Day) which makes cycling in England sound very dangerous compared to where I live.

don't really care about viewpoints of why not to ride in London. That is irrelevant to me. So stop.

Has anyone rented a road bike in London England. Looking for shops that do so? that would be helpful. thanks

Sorry, should have made that clearer - I own 2 bikes so no need to rent.

I do about 25-50 miles a week in London (recreational) and the only trouble I've had was hitting a dog in a park (owner stopped 3 feet in front of me).

Googling "road bicycle rental London" shows quite a few:
https://www.onyourbike.com/london-bike-rental.php
https://www.livelo.cc/pages/road-bike-rental-london-1 (that's a picture of Richmond Park)
https://www.listnride.com/search?loc...iew_type=bikes

https://www.londoncyclist.co.uk/bicycle-rental-london/ (10 years old)

Edit:
Dog was a mastiff type and was perfectly fine, I went over the bars and had a bent fork, but only £30 to fix.

Hey there I live in London and previously had both purchased and rented with On Your Bike that Aardwolf linked to, can recommend. I cycle all the time in London and have done for many years, its a good place to bike and getting better every year with even more bike lanes.

I checked a couple of Trek websites in London shops to see if they rent (hire) bikes, but if they do, it wasn't advertised.

When I lived in Cambridge, there were places that rented thousands of bikes to summer students, but they were very basic. It might be possible they have some actual road bikes.

Hopefully an actual Londoner will answer this before Smelly talks you out of biking.

(I brought my own bike over when I lived there.)

Isn't it 'hiring' in the UK?

You might want to check with forum member @botty kayer. He can often be found in the Classic and Vintage forum, especially in the thread "Show me pics of your bike with graffiti."

I'm London based but as I have my.own bikes I've never hired any.

I would ask what you are planning. If you are just planning on using a bike for exploring the city, the santander/boris bikes and are probably the best and easiest option. They are tanks and weigh a lot but central London is flat and they have some.electric assist ones now too. There's also other hire bike schemes on a pay as you use basis like Forest bikes who have a large fleet and there's a myriad of electric scooter companies for short trips in and around Central London.

If you are planning on more modern fancy modern bikes Rapha do hiring, and for more hybrid/basic road bikes "On your bike" in London Bridge do hiring too, those are the ones i'm aware of.

If you are.over here for an extended period and plan to do some touring beyond London, im sure you'd find bike hire cheaper outside London.

And depending on how long you plan to hire for, it may be cheaper to keep an eye on Facebook marketplace or ebay or something and buy a bargain bike when you're here.

You will defo needs locks, nice bikes can get targeted by thieves. Like cycling in any city youve.got to keep your eyes open, but its a great city to cycle in and the best way to see the city. Its winter now so if you coming this time of year bring plenty of.warm clothing gloves etc, but from April to October it's great.
