Need help with wheels
 

Hello. I need advice. I currently have a Scott Addict 20, with the wheels it’s came with. I would really love to upgrade to something decent carbon maybe somewhere in the range of $1k for the set.

I tried going to the bike shop where I got the bike, but they are so high pressure and have so many options it’s hard to parse through all the information and I don’t do well in those scenarios. Also tried doing the research, but man there is so much out there it’s hard to tell if I’m making the right decision and if they will even fit.

That is where you local shop can help you find the right wheels, they can make sure they are the correct fight and get down to what you might want! There are lots of options for wheels and your shop is probably going to give you a smaller selection then the wide and vast internet community because they know what they would use and ride and recommend. I would reach out to them and say hey I bought this and I am looking for a wheel that has these properties and have them send you an email with a few options and then you can bring that here and it will help better narrow things down. I typically do that for my customers if I know the bike or have looked it over and can give them a couple options (or more sometimes depending on the situation) and we can chat for as long as needed sometimes and really figure out what would work best for them.

I like the concept of the forged fiber wheels and have heard good things from them and want to build up a set myself at some point down the road.

Your budget for a "decent" new carbon wheelset is low. HUNT might get close to your needs.

With the same budget in mind I chose a Mavic Ksyrium wheelset.
Yes the Mavic are alloy and 1575g/pair , Carbon could save 4-8+oz/pair but at what additional cost.
Plus, the Ksyrium uses the "Fore" system and does not require rim tape should you wish to go tubeless.

I upgraded my Addict R1 last year with Winspace Lún HYPER wheels, and I have only great things to say about them. It was a worthwhile upgrade.

Winspace makes a less expensive version of the HYPER wheels, called simply Lún Road. They're slightly heavier than the HYPERs, and they don't use carbon spokes, but otherwise they are similar. They ought to fit any disc-brake/thru-axle road frame, but I guess you should check the size of your thru-axles, which need to be 12x100mm front, 12x142mm rear.

I have considered a rim brake set for my first road bike; no point to spend big on rim brake wheels. How are the hubs?

butt, ... I do believe in quality handbuild wheels, QA'd for trueness and tension by a professional. Esp, if they identify the build as their work. And, ... not slamming mass produced wheelsets.

The hubs seem fine. Hub body is designed by Wnspace, bearings are standard cartridge.

Oh boy ... read every post. I'm just not seeing the wisdom of spending $1K to 'upgrade' the o.p. wheelset for any reason. Certainly not with a new wheelset and buying used carbon wheels is ... well I wouldn't do it. But used is about the only way the o.p. is going to get wheels significantly lighter than the OEM under budget. The Roval wheels that recent posts mentioned are not significantly lighter than the OEM Syncros RP 2.0.

The last time I had this kind of weight weenie wistfulness, luck was with me. I had recently taken a plane trip for a family funeral. The passenger next to me was about as sick as a person can be and still stand. Three days later, I got about as sick as I have ever been in life. Running 104°F for over a week took me from Clyde territory 203lb to a roadworthy 185lb in less than 2 weeks!! The Flu™ has got to be the weight weenie on a budget (under $500 Domestic Airline ticket) speed secret of the decade. FWIW.

Had several sets of Winspace wheels. Superb build quality and well designed hubs. Farsports are equally good and similar price. Can get the same Farsports wheels through Wheelsfar at even better prices

Check out the Boyd options - CF and Aluminum. I've been very happy with the three sets of aluminum wheels we have in our family, one Altamont in 700c and two CCC in 650B. NOthing but good things to say about the quality and the customer service. At the time I bought them, in the height of the pandemic, they were a great value especially considering availability. For what it's worth, the weights listed for the CCC and Altamont aluminum wheels are accurate. and pretty good.
