I wouldn't doubt there's something to that, but in that case, safety requirements disallow break-in requirements, for me.

Another thing I did was use Shimano's Multi-release cleats, even though they were a separate purchase. SM-SH56

The 3 hole to 2 hole adapter is a great idea, but the one Shimano put out is unusable because there are no forwards-backward adjustments possible.
The reason why it would be a great idea, is because when the pontoons wear out from walking, you can easily replace them. Whereas when the bottom of your SPD recessed-cleat shoes wear out from walking, you have to throw the shoes away.
