OK - I've used the search function and have got less than stellar results. I have an Trek incite8i computer that has been a real pain in the @#%X%. Local bike shop set it for me and when i get home to check it out- it still does'nt work. Are there any better ones out there??? Some that are easily programed that actually work as designed. What do you use and are you happy with it???

Throw it out, there are many many more that are much better quality. For example, I would look at the Cateye line of products:http://www.cateye.com/en/products/vi...ls.php?catId=6

There are more though, search around you'll find a lot.

What is the problem with the current unit? Is it simply dead? If you are more specific regarding what's wrong, perhaps someone can help you fix it.

I cannot get the odometer to work. the speedometer will not work . the programing for the wheel size is confusing. Instructions are very confusing.

I have a Trek Incite (11i maybe...forget which exact one) and it works great!!

What's yours doing? Or not doing?

Bike Shop told me that they had reprogramed the unit and that all I would have to do was push the lower left hand button to change the screen . the speedometer still will not show speed and the odometer still reads zero after a 5 mile ride.

Sounds like the magnet isn't registering.

Can you check the magnet on the wheel and the sensor it goes by? Make sure they are still there and close enough to register.

I have a Trek 6i computer and think it is junk!

Anything you buy other than a Trek computer is bound to be a vast improvement.

Even if you get the Trek computer to work, it will have inexcusable problems. For instance, you often have to push the “toggle” button several times in order to advance to the next function. There is no rhyme or reason as to which functions it will hang up on, or how many times you will have to jab at that stupid button to get it to change to the next function.

I recommend that you throw that junky Trek computer in the trash and get a Cateye.

Funny thing is that my Trek computer (which has worked just fine, though it is relatively new) has so far been a good replacement to the P.O.S. Cateye that I had before this one.

I moved and adjusted the magnet on the wheel and now it is aligned with the sensor per the instructions I downloaded off of treks website. Will take the bike for a spin after dark as it is to hot here to check it out now. Do any of you have a "SIGMA" as i have been told that they are very nice.Will also checkout the "Cateyes" as many of you agree that they are very good units. I agree with the above post that stated you have to keep pushing a lot of times to get the trek comp. to change screens to get the readout you want!

On my cateye, the pick-up sensor on the fork keeps moving. When the computer doesn't work, this is the first place I look.It was installed by the LBS. One of these days I will shoegue the sensor on and put some real nylon ties on it.

I actually just got the Trek incite 8i and I'm having trouble getting it to read anything. The time, speed, and odometer all won't start. I got everything set to zero, but it just wont start reading anything. The clock works fine, but the time function doesn't even start. Is this suppose to be automatic or is there some trick to get it to start, or did I just get a faulty computer? Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

The Incite 8I is wireless with a transmission distance of 23 inches. That means the sensor has to be on the fork and the magnet on a front wheel spoke. If you try to mount the sensor on a seat stay or chain stay and the magnet on the rear wheel, the transmission distance to the receiver on the handlebars will be too great.

I have a cateye that I have been using for 10 years and I'm quite happy with it. My only complaint is it acts up in rain or heavy fog. But once I dry it off and let it sit for a day it goes back to working perfectly. Ocassionally (maybe 2 or 3 times in 10 years) it mysteriously stopped registering speed and I just had to reset it.

The wheel magnet must be within 2mm of the pickup.
I have a magnet on the bench that I use as a quick check to make sure the pick up is doing its thing.
On a wired computer the computer has to be snapped fully into the holder or the contacts don't touch.
On a wireless the transmitter and computer need to be close enough to work. I wil take the computer off the bar and wave my magnet back and forth past the transmitter, bringing the computer closer to the trannsmitter until I get a reading.

BTW, you don't have to go for a five mile ride to see if your speedo is working. Just lift the front wheel off the ground and spin it. If it doesn't start registering speed within about 2 seconds, it ain't working.

I have the sensor and magnet off the bike to test them. I wave the magnet right past the sensor and it makes a clicking type noise as I wave it past. I do this at different distances away from the computer and even do it right next to it and there is still no reading on the computer.

I have a Back Trails and a Cateye Mity 2. I think the Back Trails uses the same chip as the Trek. I find it real confusing to program and it has frequent problems not picking up the magnet. The Cateye requires less programming and almost always works. Unfortunately, the Mity 2 is an older unit and may not be available anymore.

OK! The computer only works when it is upside down! I discovered this by accident a few minutes after my last post. I put the computer down face down for some reason and started playing with the magnet and sensor again then put those down. Typed for a little bit then I looked at the computer and there was time and max speed and average speed listed?! I played with it a little more and sure enough, it only works when it is face down. Anyone else's do this?

Alrighty then, now it is working more consistently. I don't know why it wouldn't do it before. Anyways, don't worry about me now! Thanks though.

I've been using a Cateye Enduro for the last 3 years. Love it, love it, love it. (Mine is an Enduro 2. I think the current one is the Enduro 8). It wasn't hard to set up and it works great, both on my MTB and my commuter bike. It likes rain and snow and mud, it doesn't mind being dropped. It's easy to use. Not too expensive either. ($25 or so).

I think wireless computers are a pain in the @ss to troubleshoot. At least in the old days with the wired ones, I would just remove the computer from the mount, hook up an oscilloscope to the pins and see what kind of a waveform we get when spinning the wheel. Then adjust as necessary to get the minimum peak-to-peak voltage.

Now, it could be an interference problem, or weak transmitter batteries, or even the phase of the moon can throw these things off. You gotta have a complete AWACS set-up just to figure out the frequency it's transmitting on and gotta capture and decode it and all... what a mess!
