My Landlord Has a Ton Of Bikes Rotting

This is a shame. I was trying to find the shared house garbage can and was looking around the sides of the house where my basement apartment is and I saw a window that I remember used to be my Landlord's old bike shop. (Maybe, 10 years ago? Maybe longer?) I peeked into the darkened, dusty window only to see 100+ bikes PILED as high as the ceiling! There was only a hook/latch keeping the outer window open and on the other side was bars.. so I cracked the window a bit so I could get these pics. Isn't this sad? I feel so bad for these bikes.

I knew he was an avid biker and I even asked him when I moved in if he had any parts he'd like to donate to the Bike Project I volunteer(ed) at, but he shrugged it off. Now, I'm not saying he should have.. but a piece of me dies when I think of all these bikes being wasted for years in this smelly 20x8 foot room.

(I hope he doesn't visit these forums! hehehe)

Strange that he would hoard all of those bikes, maybe they still belong to customers!
I was out apartment hunting today and the superintendent gave the grand tour of the building including the room he keeps all of the abandoned bikes. He said that he waits to see if someone will eventually claim the bikes and then if not he sells them at his annual garage sale. One of the bikes had a nice sprung Brooks which he is going to let me have.

Man, who knows what could be hidden in there? That stuff needs to be used. Maybe you could offer to clean up that space for him, in exchange for some goodies.

Uh, kill you landlord so you can get free rent and pillage an unknown bike stash?

The first thing that came to mind.

Sounds like the landlords a hoarder, there's no chance that type would even give you a rotten tire from his 'stash' of vintage bikes. I would find some time no one's home and go on a exploratory dig, then liberate the bike of your choice. Move out shortly thereafter.

It does suck the guy doesn't donate those to a bikes program. I've known plenty of people with the same hoarding mentality. Us crazy Americans, we have so much stuff we don't even know what to do with it all.

That was my thougt exactly. Some people are very weird about their "treasures." Maybe he is aspiring to be an honorary Collyer brother.

Is he an older guy that isn't computer savvy? Too achy to do the work of organizing the bikes? Maybe if you volunteer to help him put those up on ebay, he'll let you take a pick from the pile. You'd have to make him think it's in his best interest and earning a ton of dough would definitely be. You'd also have to tell him you're doing it for the love of the bikes with not other ulterior motive.

That's the same thing I thought. Perhaps you can look for my bike that was stolen in NOLA about 15 years ago...

Wow. Looks like a few of those could make good SS or fixie conversions.

Guess I got lucky. My dad's neighbor gave me his old Sears 26" ten speed. Friction shift on the down tube, 26 x 1 3/8 tires. Thought of turning it into a SS/ fixie commuter. My wife likes it, and claimed it.

It does look like junk, but I'd be looking for the tools and toolboxes. Now that would be some serious treasure!
