Clydesdale Brooks Recommendation?
 
Hello,

I am a newbie, looking for a new seat for my bike. I'm considering the Brooks line since they are so highly recommended here along with a couple of others. I am a clydesdale rider, 6'5", >270lbs. Which model of Brooks should I be looking at? Is the base B17 adequate? I don't mind spending the extra $$ if it is worthwhile for the proper seat.

Seats are a very personal choice. What works for one anatomy may well not for another. As a clyde myself I run the Team Pro and am quite happy with it. The B-17 is a bit wider and has also worked for me in the past. I'd shy away from the Ti rail Swallow model.

The B17 is considered by sellers to be the least-returned, least complained about, saddle. I have a b17 and a team pro, they're both good, I'd say you can't go wrong with the B17.

Hi,
I have the Flyer and the B67. The Flyer is just a B17 with springs.
It was giving me hip and low back pain. I got the B67, and if I can survive the break in, I can notice an improvement so far with the hips and back.

You should also consider the titanium railed B17 if you are under 200 pounds.

My 2 cents is that if you have your bars roughly even with the saddle, the B17 often works. If the bars are more than an inch or two higher go with one of the wider ones. Maybe. If you are using a roadie position, one of the more agressive saddles might be the ticket. I am switching from roadie rims to touring rims, and putting on wider tires to boot. I may switch back to the Flyer in the spring to see if that helps. But for now I am using the B67.
Just so you know, a couple weeks ago i did 66 miles on the Flyer.
I couldn't have done that on most saddles.

I've got a B-17 and a B-69. I use the 69 on the bike with the more upright seating, the 17 on the "racer." Both are comfortable for my 6'2", 255# self.

The right seat is matter of minding your riding position as
your hips and "sit" bones rotate the more upright you sit.

That said, I've always liked a wide spring seat for "cruiser"
style riding while a more "aero" ride felt better on a narrow
seat.

Thanks for the info everyone. I should have given a little more info. I have a comfort bike that I ride sitting up with my handlebars well above my seat. So, would a brooks with a spring (Flyer) be appropriate and strong enough to hold my 270lb weight? Or would a B17 be the right choice from Brooks? Am I missing one? Price isn't a real issue - I just want a seat that will last under my weight that is appropriate for my situation.

Both will serve you well. Your weight is of NO CONCERN with these models. It boils down to personal preference. The difference between the two saddles mentioned is the spring action. Suspension in the seatpost of rear of the bike? get the regular (B 17). Have suspension for the rear in one spot: Saddle, post, rear frame. You pick which.

6' / 250lbs here. Currently using a B17, have used B17 and Team Pro in the past. Team Pro was better on a bike I had with a more hunched over position, B17 better for more upright.

Both very comfy.

I have never owned or ridden a sprung Brooks. I'd like to sometime.

I've been running a Conquest on my mountain bike for the last 15 or so years(I can't exactly recall but it was the year they started making them!).
Highly recommended for upright styles.

Look at the Brooks that have springs rear & springs front and rear for "Cruiser style" upright
riding. I ride on a springs at rear Brooks B67 that does fine on my utility bike.

I can't comment on the sprung brooks as I've never ridden one but I REALLY like my B-17 and I'm 6'2" - 259 pounds. My seat "broke-in" very quickly. I will never buy another seat.. well, maybe a Ti, swift, in British Green for my color shifting Raleigh R600 :-)
