Who Doesn't Ride?
We've all seen the posts where we brag on having 10,000 miles in for the month and averaging 20 mph all the while. But i thought it might be interesting to hear from some of the forum members that don't ride all that often.
Maybe you just like bikes? Maybe you aren't as thrilled with riding them? Anyone? |
I actually feel bad when I don't ride... although other forms of exercise can help relieve that feeling, there is something special about "attacking" on a bike that is hard to duplicate anywhere else.
It's funny as I was off my bike for just over 2 years after a job change... I was just fed up with auto traffic... I can now ride off the street in certain areas and this has renewed my obsession. It wasn't the bike that put me off, it was simply dodging traffic that burned me out. |
Haven't ridden in over two weeks. Life kinda gets in the way sometimes, but twice a week is more typical for me. Have an organized metric this weekend. Seriously considering biking to work to get some miles in. I'm gonna build a city-beater to ride when I just want to go around the block a few times, go get milk or whatever. Seems a little overkill to ride the mega-geared-clipless-always-go-fast-long-distance bikes for that. That, my children, is part of my variant of OCP. The bike fits the duty....

I feel wierd when I don't ride every day. I do take a day off here and there and many days it is only 7-10 miles of my commute but weekend days can be between 50-100 miles each day so...
Yesterday I was off the bike and I needed it...the legs didn't feel good and neither did the stomach. |
I live on my bike. I commute, go for rides, tool around, go shopping, I love it. Man, where the hell go I go when I leave Holland? Arrgh!

I am probably in between a rec rider and an enthusiast. I try to ride at least 5 days a week but I don't blow a gasket if I don't get a chance to either, hey sometimes life happens. I am generally more relaxed and happy after I have gotten in a ride though.

Some may be sidelined because of injury/health reasons.

My wife and I have to get some form of exercise every day, and prefer the bike, and we go stir crazy if we don't. But a good walk will do, also.
Since I am recovering from a heart procedure, and the wife currently has shingles, it limits us a bit. But still, I got over 3 miles of walking in today, (and she got about a mile of walking) and have been doing gentle 20 mile rides other days. I generally rode about 150 miles per week before the procedure, and hope to soon get back to that amount. What I am really obsessive about is weight lifting. I start feeling like I am getting weaker if I don't get my regular "fix" in a couple or three times per week. |
I try to get in as much as possible, but I switch it up. MTB, road, maybe a little "city" commuting, or short slower rides with the wife. Sometimes schedules and life gets in the way too. I teep track of individual ride milage but dont keep track of monthly or wekkly milage.

I'm a recreational rider. I use cycling as part of my cross-training. And I tried the whole commute-to-work bit. Being out in the fresh morning air is nice, but it's such a pain cleaning up at work, etc., then doing it all over again in the afternoon for the ride home. I'd rather drive to work & home, then go for a longer ride in the afternoon instead of two shorter rides.
I don't see a bicycle as a viable alternative to a motorized vehicle. At best, it's a poor-man's means of transportation, or at least a junior/high school kid's way to scoot around town without mommy driving him. |
i don't get to ride as much as i like. as a full-time adult student and a part-time member of the workforce, i have to devote more time than i'd like to feeding myself and studying.
i usually ride 1-2 times a week, with ride distances in the 15-40 mile range and avg speeds in the 12-17 mph range. a bicycle is a viable alternative to a motorised vehicle - i've used one as such in the past. but it depends on location. there is no way i could go back to just a bike where and how i live now. |
I went to Ottawa today -- by plane -- and can't tell you how jealous I was of the bikers rolling happily on the bike trail alongside the Rideau Canal as the taxi headed toward downtown. I even started wondering if I could come up by train next time and take the bike and try out some Ottawa cycling, although I know that's a totally silly idea. I didn't ride today, and probably won't tomorrow, as I get back too late, and I don't like it. I feel fat and angry. I miss it.

I don't ride everyday. I usually only ride once or twice a week. But I feel much better when I do ride. I've had other things I've had to do for the past few weeks. But yesterday and today I've snuck in a couple of 5 mile rides. It aint much but it'll have to do for now. I just have to keep telling myself if I hire the work done, then I won't be able to afford that trike I've had my eye on.

I was going to pick the first option only for the fact some times I just haven't the time. If I don't cycle at least 100 miles in a week I start getting withdrawn symptoms :(

I usually ride 4 or 5 days a week, usually they are short rides on my lunch hour or after work but just being on the bike makes me feel good. I would be happy just riding around a parking lot as long as I was able to get on my bike.
