Illegal to Park on Sidewalk

The security team at the building I park my bike outside of have been telling me it is illegal to park my bike on the sidewalk in front of their building, andf illegal tolock it to a tree or city sign post.

Is this true?

Not sure where public roads/sidewalks end and private property begins.

Thanks

John

It depends on your local laws. Where are you parking your bike?

It's entirely local law. Around here, cyclists have strong rights to park written into the law -- we have the right to park at anything sticking out of the sidewalk other than a fire hydrant or a tree less then 10" in diameter (for fear the tree would get cut to steal the bike). We also have the right to park against any building that abuts the sidewalk.

Ask a real cop what the law is. Perhaps there is not a law they just don't want you to park there. If it ok to park get a copy of the law and whip it out and show the secrurity gurard a copy of the law.

Most sidewalks in New York are actually owned by the buildings they're alongside, with a right to pass "revocable at will" - which is mostly only invoked so that buildings can close sidewalks for contruction and whatnot. You occasionally see signs to that effect, or little brass plaques embedded in the sidewalk... so even if you're legally parked by city law, the building may have the right to remove your bike.

I would imagine putting on signs is illegal. Sidewalk determines on who owns the sidewalk.
