heck of a case of road rash!
U.S. Postal's Michael Barry of Canada rides on despite crashing earlier during the 174 kilometer (108 mile) 8th stage of the Tour of Spain, Vuelta a Espana, cycling race from Malaga to Ubrique, southern Spain, Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002. To add insult ot injury I believe that he got
run over by one of the official motorcycles. I heard something about that while watching the stage but never saw any follow up about it. Marty edit note: Here is Barry's recount of the incident "I have a lot of cuts, some pretty deep, but no broken bones. At 50 km into the stage, three of us crashed going around a corner at high-speed. I went off the road at about 65kph," Barry recounted. "I went face-first and ripped open my chin and knees on the pavement but then was hit by a following motorcycle. The front wheel was on my chest when I tried to get up and left tire marks on the back and front of my torso. I think the bike pretty much came to a stop with me underneath as my radio was flattened and the back of my jersey torn to shreds," he said. "All in all, I was pretty lucky as the bike could have done a lot more damage. Anyhow, I am not going to world championships and my season is now over." |
HOLY CRAP!!!

Here's Barry under the motorcycle before he
rode off and the road rash picture was taken Marty |
that is a pretty nasty wound , and he is a true bike warrior...
|
He won't be rolling over much in his sleep. Those motorcycles are irritating, I'd be ready to kick the poop out of those guys at the end of a race - assuming I had the energy.

Looks like a typical commute here in San Jose ;)
|
not bad.
my face looked like that once after a fall. seriously. I still rode the 6 six mile home, after riding for a bit longer w/ my friends. I was 13 and my parents had just left for a week long vacation, leaving me at home by myself. ah, the good old days........... |
I hope he shaves his bum otherwise the gravel rash is going to hurt even more.:roflmao:
CHEERS. Mark |
Looks like some kind of TV guy ran over him. Freedom of the press I suppose.
|
Yeeeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwcccccchhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!
ewww! Man, I have the shivers after seeing that.... Damn, the man is not having muck luck.... Didnt he have trouble last year? Injury? or illness? |
Man, I didn't need to see that.
Now it's going to be in my head when I ride. Thanks a million. |
I'm not sure what is the worst part of the whole thing.
1.Crashing at 65kph 2.Getting run over by a motorcycle 3.Having your backside clearly visible through what used to be your uniform and then have every photographer in Spain take pictures and post them on the Internet... Barry is a real warrior. How many other riders would have just packed it in once they got run over? He kept on riding... |

I think it was Gadeo from Jazztel.
OUCH! OUCH! OUCH! No wonder Michael barry had to bail out. He'll be a human scab for a while. I actually felt like a real wuss this week. I crashed on railroad tracks and got up and went on. However, I'd landed on the palm of my left hand- the heel where it joins the wrist, and it hurt so much I couldn't grip the bars or squeeze the brakes. I actually have a very high threshold of pain but this was really really painful. So I had to bail feeling like a sap. Maybe if I were being paid, maybe I'd have continued, but truly, it was hard to navigate with one hand. However, it could always be worse- all we need to remind us is a photo like this! I remember seeing a similar photo of some guy from AXA in the Ronde Van Nederland last year- he'd also crashed and his shorts had basically been torn from his butt. YOWCH! On those cobblestones! |
Did anyone notice he was wearing a helmet when he crashed?Just think how bad it could have been without a helmet...
This picture should serve as an inspiration to all of us that do wear helmets. Just see what you can survive with something on/in your head! |
