More old bike ID!

Still looking for a fixer-upper, and I came across a candidate in the thrift store today. Looked like someone had cleaned their 'collection' out of the garage, about 5 old bikes, all with license stickers--Drake, AMF, Columbia, etc. Mostly look unimpressive.

One caught my eye, though! It was a mixte-frame with Dia-compe brakes which look like a cross between cantilever and sidepull, and old Suntour shifters, painted an odd shade of blue. (Mauve, perhaps.) The name brand was Golden Sports, and a small sticker on the chainstay said "Thunder." The stem said jill, and the seat was a springed leather one with a little plate saying "Viscount" on it. It has eyelets on the front and back, so may be a tourer. If the oldest registration sticker on it was an indication, it was bought in 1979.

Does anyone know anything about Golden Sports or have comments on this bike? Frame seems a bit large for me (I can't really try it out), but it's tempting. Or is it just another piece of crap tricked out with impressive-looking components?

Inkwolf,

I had a Viscount back in the late 70's. It had the infamous
"death Fork" which obviously didn't kill me
They were originally marketed under the name Lambert,
until they were bought out by Yamaha who changed name
to Viscount The Lambert's (and viscounts) rebadged
EVERYTHING so the saddle is probably from one of those
and replaced on the Golden Sports.
I'll see if I can dig up some Info on Golden Sports or whatever
the frame might be.
Personally from the mix of components, I'd say pass.
Here's a pic of one of the Viscounts
Marty

I'm not familiar with the brand, but from your description it doesn't sound like a keeper --especially if it's too big for you. SunTour was as big at that time as Shimano is now. They made junk and they made quality --just like Shimano does now.

Br patient. When you least expect it, the right fixer upper will appear.

Thanks for the advice! I'm glad now that I didn't buy it before asking you about it.
