Jerseys...and what makes you say, "THAT one"?
 

A noob question:

I was in my LBS and couldn't help noticing all the multi-colored cycling jerseys sporting product logos. I was curious as to what the forum members think about when they select such a jersey.

All other things being equal (such as size, cut, and fit), what do you base your selection on?

• Do you go for one that sports products you like, ("Hey, this one's got my cell-phone provider on it!")
• Do you go for the aesthetics, ("I don't care about the products. Most of 'em aren't available in this country anyway. I just love the colors!")
• Do you go with some other factor, ("This is just like the jersey that so-and-so wore in such-and-such race...")

Naturally, if you don't buy jerseys like these, the question is moot. :D

I generally go for a bright color for visibility and a good fabric. I dont tend to do the "team" stuff unless it is too cool to pass up: I just had to have the Colnago Ferrari and Primal Wear Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon jerseys:)

I only do wool. Bright is good.

What do I base my selection on?

They were cheap!

They were also plain ... as in no advertizing. If I want to go around looking like a billboard for some large sports company, that sports company had better be paying me to wear their jersey!

They had the look or feel I was after - comfortable, nice cut, a variety of colors ... plus some are sleeveless for hot days, some are short-sleeved for average days, and some are long-sleeved for cool days.

And I do have three that are Canadian - two for teams I've been on, and one that is just a Canadian jersey. I wear them when I participate in international events.

Solid color, long sleeves for summer, short sleeves for winter, and price.

I wish more people held such logic. I buy the jerseys that I can afford. I tend to like more classically styled ones rather than those with snakes or explosions on them. Actually, now I kind of want one with snakes and explosions on it.

Is it just me or did you get the two mixed up? Perhaps Short sleeves for summer and long sleeves for winter?

1) High visability. The guy who hits me is going to have to claim he was blinded by the jersey, not that he did not see me.

2) Full or at least long zipper that works well.

1. Modern materials. They work.

2. Bright colors.

3. Logos, preferably from Euro teams from two or three seasons ago. I just don't consider myself to be selling out if I wear a Credit Agricole jersey. Fact is, there aren't any Credit Agricole branches anywhere near me...

generally plain w/ bright colors. modern materials, altho i'd like to try wool if i could find jerseys made from it at reasonable prices.

occasionally i'll by a team jersey, ie i have one of the grey postal jerseys, picked it up because i knew they were going away as a sponsor.
i have a CSC bib and jersey, because it was made by assos and was a really low price and i've wanted to try out assos for a awhile but never wanted to spend for the normal price.

Let's see, what I have I ridden in lately... Rolling Stones Tattoo You, Hollywood Blonde (get lots of comments on that one), just plain red, Grouch from Sesame Street, Wonder Bread (only way I'll ever wear polka-dots), one that's a Cow Hide Pattern. I guess that I go for tacky. Yea, that's it, I want tacky, non-team jerseys. I missed out on an E-bay logoed jersey by just a tich.... that would be a fave automatically.

I do like modern materials, and am fond of zippers that let me get plenty of air when I'm overheated. I also like ones that have a nice 2 tone pattern, nothing flashy.

Other possibilities:

1. Jereseys that catch my eye with a cool picture on it, or maybe something cool I can associate with (like a Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon jersey I've had my eye on lately).

2. It must NOT have any advertisement on it....I am NOT a billboard!

I commute rather than pleasure ride... so I also go for hi-vis, low price. Which has resulted in me only owning one jersey, a plain neon yellow one I bought before I found www.alertshirt.com. Technically alert shirts aren't jerseys but who cares they are bright enough to damage your retinas and they're $7.75 apiece :D.

I'd like to try wool but I have no idea where you get decent blindingly obnoxious inexpensive wool shirts/jerseys.

What about....yellow? For some reason I have a block about ordering/wearing yellow when riding my bike. Somehow I feel like I haven't earned it. Is that wierd?

Only if it has Credit Lionnais all over it....

I dig rockin' the 2005 Hampsten/Cinghiale jersey with the old Faema patern (except in creme/orange instead of white/red) and the boarhead logo on the back pocket when I'm out on the roads.

Seriously now, how does that make sense? I prefer long sleeves in the summer to protect my skin from sunburn. Since I used to do a lot of evening rides too, they protected me from airborne pests. In winter, I can get by with short sleeves, but I still wear sunblock. I just need to work harder to stay warm. Not a problem in California or Australia.

Colorful aggressive patterns that make people I'm riding with do a quick double take and say things like "where did you get that jersey?" Not yellow (I am slow, and the color doesn't go with my eyes :) ) and no advertising. I might bend the no advertising rule if they made jerseys for something I really like or admire (Oxfam bike jersey, anyone?). Oh, and I have one with the company logo that we organized for a charity ride a while back. That's sort of fun on occasion.

I have two jerseys with logos. One is the logo of the company my wife works for which she was given for free. The other advertises Bikeforums.net. All other jerseys are solid colors or logoless and were purchased at a sale price.

I just go with what I like:

Ohio State (BS '90)
Tennessee (MBA '92)
Pearl Izumi Hi-Vis (for low light, although the TN jersey is equally as bright)
2 x Specialized, simple graphics no text (like the color and fit)
'04 Rails to Trails (cool design, good organization)
Cannondale Ride Free or Die USA (cool jersey and I ride a Cannondale)
Pearl Izumi Team Long Sleeve (matches the bike and I need a long sleeve)
Italia (hopefully going next year)

Plus a handful of old beater mountain bike jerseys (cotton based) that I don't really wear anymore, since I don't really mountain bike anymore.

We tandem, so my wife has matching Rails/Trails, Cannondale, and Italia jerseys for those big events.

I've seen a couple cool USA jersey's I would not mind, plus an official OSU cycling team jersey would be cool as well.

Price, fit, and it has to look cool, like a neat design on it.

Don't care too much about logos, but plastering logos all over doesn't constitute a neat design. Only two of my jerseys have logos on them... one is a Cannondale/Sobe one, orange and black, because the lizards are cool... the other is a warm, longsleeve Cannondale/Volvo one because it was cheap and fit well.
