Christmas Parade Ride

Hey Gang,

The bike club I'm with rode in our local Christmas Parade. I just gotta post about it.

I wore a full Santa suit, complete with boot tops and a beard. The fact that I'm only 155 after a full meal diminished the effect a bit, but I just told people that Ms. Santa wanted me to slim down a bit. I rode the C-Dale Touring bike with full racks and red panniers front and rear, decorated with red bows, ribbons and bells. Mix that against the green bike, it looked very festive.

It's HARD to ride 3 MPH waving at kids and trying to throw candy canes without running over anyone. I'm really glad that I've got very low gears on it, even then it was take a pedal, coast, another turn on the pedals, coast. Wobble/swerve, repeat.

Everyone had a great time, we had a couple of beautifully restored old Schwinn bikes, a 4 wheel pedal -car, a recumbant trike, and one tandem. Everybody had their bikes decorated, one even had a small tree attached to the rear rack.

Kids LOVE Santa. Adults LOVE Santa. Everybody LOVES Santa. I'm thinking of wearing the suit next time I go out on a Saturday nite.

A Santa suit over a set of tights and a base layer / jersey is warm. Very Warm. It was 35 Degrees and I was hot. Fake santa beards do a great job of warming the air coming in, but tend to make your glasses fog up.

The best part was the ride home. I decided not to take the suit off, and I think every car honked at me, 2 people asked if I needed a ride, 1 pulled off a block ahead to take my picture as I went by.

I had a great time, I'm totally pumped from it. If you ever get a chance to ride in a parade, it's great.

Sounds like good community service.

Lightly apply brakes and constantly pedaling in low helps maintain balance at slow speeds. Throwing candy canes at low speed would take some coordination.
