Best time to buy a bike?

When is the best time to buy a new bike? When would I generally be able to get the best deals?

I think near the end of the bicycle season assuming there is an end. I live in the Northeast (USA) and a lot of the bike shops become ski shops in the winter and try to sell off their bikes to make room. I got a pretty good deal on my first Trek bike last August when they had a sale.

Illinois? I'd guess a lot of good "sales" around around September 1st. Probably another good sale around December 26th. But, the problem is that "sales" often feature the bikes that did not sell. Odd sizes. Odd colors. That size 60 bike in the cool fire engine red that you wanted got sold last week.

So, if you want the best selection of sizes, models, colors, you may need to buy on a different schedule. When I live in "The Great White North", it seems as though most bike shops had the best selection of bikes around March or so. By May, many of the most attractive bikes were gone. By September, you were looking at leftovers.

Here in Houston, people who really are serious about riding bikes ride year around (not the "pretend racers" in their "Pretend Lance" ***forms...just real cyclists). As a result, bike shops get in new bikes all year. And, as always, the "sales" tend to feature bikes that were hard to sell (such as the last "hard fork" mountain bikes when the front suspension fad took hold).

Some shops have an end of season sale, like the one mentioned above in an area that gets snow. Wouldn't happen in SoCal. Some may have an after-Christmas or end of year sale. Or they may blow out the 05's when the 2006 models come in. Depends on how the shop conducts their business. Also depends on the bike.

Here's an example - 2005 GT BMX bikes come in all sorts of colours. Haro BMX bikes have a limited colour range. We were throwing in a $70 helmet and making all sorts of deals on the Haro bikes, because they weren't selling. Want a GT? Pay full price. The Giant Rincon is available in blue or silver. We sold blue over silver 3:1. Buy a silver one and save $70.

The point is that timing is not the only thing that counts. You can sometimes get a better deal on the slow seller, or less-popular colour. You need to ask. Unless you're after a particular bike, see what they can do. And never accept a deal if the bike does not fit you.

That said, after lunch is still best. I'm much more agreeable when my stomach isn't yelling for me to throw some food down. Conversely, if you come in 10 or 15 minutes before closing, you're not going to get any deals.

Cheers.

I would say near the end of the season too. Now is not a great time to get a bike frm an LBS. I know at least the nearest shop to me has very little in stock during the winter, as its much slower

Find a Supergo/Performance and get all the good stuff they are clearing to replace with their house brands since they merged.

No specific time. When you are ready to buy. look around. one of the local bike shops will have come across a supplier clearing out last years, or they have the Crazy Larry Sale on that week - there is always something to be found - just don't decide on the bike model first - be open to get what you can.

One last note. Price isn't everything. a bit more $$ spent at a shop that goes out of their way to keep you happy is a good use of money.
