SF: disabled kids bikes stolen

this isn't fixed/ss, but it is about bikes, and it sucks a lot, mods, can we leave this here?

from the article: "Dozens of disabled kids lost an exhilarating link to freedom — and a hallmark of childhood — when thieves stole about 30 of their specially crafted bicycles from a locked storage room in Berkeley."

article is here https://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cg...12/13/BORP.TMP

i've done some lousy things in my life, but this takes the cake. please keep your eyes out.

that is seriously messed up.

EDIT: after reading the whole article and realizing the extent of how specialized these bikes are and how much they'd mean to someone who otherwise couldn't get on a bike (tandems for blind kids? handpowered bikes? come one)...this is really, really sad.

i hope they catch those people.

damn. this is messsed.

for some reason though, i think there's a good chance they could get them back... being that the bikes were one of kind, hand crafted outfits.

i'll keep and eye and ear out.

I donate many hours of work (bike mecanic, sawing fabrics, making funky stuff...etc ) to the Tinkers Workshop in berkeley, this organization is the one, that "Sub-lease" the space for the handcap bikes, I never work on them, but i can tell you they are extremlly well build and as top of the line in concept and manufacturing as it gets..

on another subject my friend Danny is the one that found the bike at the coliseum fleamarket, acording to him the seller have two of this bikes at the time danny got his (First and only recover so far that i know off) Danny did tell me the seller have seven of them that friday morning...

also last wensday (two days before danny found the other bike) i got to see a "Gentleman" riding one of this red hand pedal recumbents and I wonder how he got one, since he was a able body person and did not have any idea how to operate the vehicle, silly me i did not make the connection right there and follow him home , ask him some questions, call the cops or do something...

as long as I know all the bikes are painted red (I think is one that is black) and they are really easy to recognize since they are hand crafter hand pedal human power vehicles

i keep you guys posted when and If i learn more about it..

thanks for the interest and solidarity.

Ricardo

Wow, Danny came into my shop friday with the bike he found at the swap meet and showed it to me. It was a super-small (child size) hand-cranked trike. He said he thought it was probably stolen and was trying to find the owner...guess he never thought it could be this bad, and I never thought the next news I heard about it would be in bf. Who the **** steals that stuff... Any of you folks who are able are highly encouraged to contribute to rebuilding the fleet. While you're at it, hit up Tinker's Workshop (that's the org that Danny works for.) Solid folks who do lots of free bike-related programs for kids.

Can I mail a blunt object to someone in SF in the event that one of you finds out who did this?

I know what you mean, but think about this - there are only so many of us here. There are a lot of riders that never get in here and wouldn't see it. Honestly, I don't know the best place to put it - Advocasy and Saftey has the same problem, General Cycling isn't the best...

Maybe it could be put up as an announcement across all of the boards for a week or something so that people from all the forums could see it?

Because this is SERIOUSLY WHACKED! I know there is a special hell for bike theives, and these guys are sure to make it to the lowest possible circle of it.

I am greatly saddened, but not particularly surprised, by this. (I used to be an aide to a young man with Down's Syndrome.)

Those that need extra support in our society are often those most victimized.

It would be cool if the Bay Area cycling community could put on some sort of benefit to help them out. I'd love to get involved if anyone has any ideas.

i mean, even if i were a bike thief (without any ethical concerns) it seems that i would pick something less recognizable than a ton of custom bicycles that, if missing, would almost invariably attract news media due to the fact that they are for special needs kids. one of the bikes mentioned even had the girl's name on the bloody bike. seriously, just go steal a bunch of specialized allez or some treks or something. the turnaround will be much less of a hassle. and the dip**** who owns one of those is probably in some position to replace it.

I will write your name with a sharpie on my reverse-blade sword. No need to mail anything.

This is really messed up. I'll be on the lookout, but I'd also like to do something to help in the meantime. I don't have a lot of free time right now, but I could donate some bike parts and money. Maybe we should get a BF fund going for this...

why doesn't the insurance pay? only a small percentage is what the article says. i swear, THOSE people are almost as bad as the thieves. they always want to get out of paying anything.

i am not a particularly large fan of insurance companies, by any means, but without specific information about the organization's particular policy, you cannot really condemn anyone. one could definitely imagine that they don't have much in the way of insurance on the bicycles in order to save money and because the likelihood of them getting stolen, as far as they would have thought, was quite small.
