I prefer jerseys b/c I need pockets and zippers -- base layers rarely have the latter and never have the former.

really though, at some point adornment is sortta a natural thing, and certainly not confined to just humans. And the 'advertisement' thing has its graphic and design value. Then there is the balance of color/blocking/line.
Having been in the sports & sportsrag trade for umpteen years, the approach and use of 'design' elements is really what makes the diff.
Jersey designs like the La Vie Claire from the 80s, below, was a high style example of the art form, same with 'Z' and a bunch of other well styled team kit from those days. And if you see a pic of Greg or Hinault outfitted in their kit, they looked sharp. Most of the team kit stuff these days more like the stuff below

So... if I understand correctly, the advertising is seen as a benefit, one that carries a value of 50% or more of a garment without advertising ($60 vs $40 lets say). A colored baselayer is hardly undies unless it's see-thru which this is not.

Rust was the name that came to mind, but I think they call it "Burnt Umber" which is more OCP, I imagine.

Pockets for $20 per shirt? I don't think so... not for me at least. For $20 I can get a underseat "pocket" and another $20 for a triangular one to fit in the frame, easier access and no weight on my back/butt. I can fit everything I need in there.

Any other words of convincement y'all could offer?

no need
you're obviously happy with your choices and those who are buying this jersey are happy with theirs (mailorder fit issues aside)

Easy there...

I got the jersey and I like it. I dig the company that's on there. They make great beer, support cycling, and support energy conservation (their facility is wind-powered).

Yeah, I could have gotten a base layer cheaper, or I could have spent two or three times more to get a 'high end' woolie from Ibex or Smartwool.

By the way, in the summer I wear their other cycling jersey, which has a big old Fat Tire logo on the back. Yeah, I'm pimping the stuff when I ride, but it has started many a great conversation while I'm on the road with fellow cyclists who normally would have just passed by had I been wearing a plain top.

I like the choice I made. Life should be fun. Make it that way, eh?

Hey it's OK, I don't mean anything by it. I actually am wondering if there's something I haven't considered, that a Jersey would provide over the base layer. I want you guys to be happy, and if there's something better than what I'm doing now, it would make me happy to know about it. After all, lots of people ride with Jersey's; mostly people who've put in thousands more miles than I have.

By the way, you can get a SmartWool zip-t mediumweight on sale right now, under $40 bucks... https://www.getzs.com/store/customer/...cat=819&page=1
no shipping either if you spend $150 I just ordered last night for me, my wife and brother - I've not seen it this low, it must be the time to buy wool.

nice - the 'rust' is actually a v-nice color (and I DO ride steel exclusively )
so tell us about sizing on these, if you've already 'experienced' it
what size do you wear in these, what you're normal size in knit shirts?

not necessarily looking for another jersey, but wool tops that are lighter than ski sweater weight aren't that easy to find, especially one with a zip neck and a great price.
thanks

Actually this will be my first SmartWool garment (other than socks). I got the REI brand lightweight zip-t in rust at Christmas. It was not itchy, but less comfortable than where I had placed my expectations so I wanted to try Smartwool because they say they only use Merino Wool of a certain diameter fiber, and promise it will be even softer than items made of Merino Wool. BTW, the REI Merino Wool leggings, made of the same material are perfectly soft on my legs, so it could just be my top is more sensitive - hey, I'm a sensitive guy!

Regarding sizing, I just refered to the Smartwool website sizing chart. I'm a clydesdale on my way down; 6'1" & 220lbs, I'm just about ready for a large, so I got one of those. I also got a couple XL's for base layers now, second layers later.

Is part of the appeal of a Jersey that it fits more snugly under the sholder area?

Oh, I forgot... another big appeal of these base layers is that you can machine wash and dry. If I had to go through hoops for my clothes, they'd never be clean...

anyone order/receive a Med or Lge and can maybe post the jersey measurements?
width across chest at underarms?
sleeve length from mid-neck (where collar meets body) to sleeve end?
body length from bottom of collar to hem (down the back)?
item descript doesn't say if it has back pockets...
Thanks
Zen.....sorry I don't have the measurements but I received a medium and it was cut a tad large for me.
It was loose in the chest and somewhat baggy.
Normally, medium jerseys fit me quite well. I just sent it back to exchange for a small.
I'm 5'8'' and 145 lbs. Chest 42"....waist 30"

I ordered one of these jerseys and it arrived today. Yes, it does run rather large. Mine is a size large and it has a 44" chest (it's 22" from armpit-to-armpit) and the body and sleeves are slightly longer than optimal for me (and I am 6'1"). I'll send it back for a medium.

By the way, I'll bet a hundred bucks that New Belgium gets them from this place:
https://www.portlandcyclewear.com/home.html

You can scroll to the bottom of that page for the sizing info. The jersey I received has exactly the stated dimensions for a large and is identical in all other respects, too. Other than sizing issues, it's a nice jersey, well-made, seems a good deal for $59 -- though I have not yet ridden in it.

Too bad I didn't know sooner....otherwise I could have sent you this one and just ordered a new one.
I hope my small comes soon. It's foggy and cold this week.
