I went shoe shopping yesterday and today. No, not for cycling shoes (I already have 3 pairs of those), but for "runners" to wear on my job and in my physical education classes ...... and I made an interesting observation:

There were a collections of "runners" in all the stores I went to that looked very similar to roadie shoes ... except that the soles were slightly more rubbery and they didn't have a spot for cleats. I actually turned one over to check!!

Since when did the roadie shoe look become popular for everyday wear?

They were sort of along the lines of these, but more plasticky-looking, and with lots of velcro strapping, and soles that were quite narrow under the shoe (they didn't flare out):

Is it possible this trend toward the look of cycling shoes could be because of the increased popularity of a certain cycling person in the US?

A comparison:

I'm not surprised.....people wear 'bowling' shoes in the streets...:D

Sometimes fashion comes from wierd places. I remember kids on You Can't Do That On Television wearing cycling jerserys. Cycling caps have been "in" in the past.

if this is the case, then why the heck can't i find a shoe that looks like roadie shoe, except with recessed cleats? all i can find is the big clunky MTB shoes, and those alien-looking commuter shoes.

Oh no! So all the running shoes will be silver too. Next it will be moccasins and Birkenstocks.

It could be worse. We could have cycling shoes that you pump up.

I've seen a (recent, which may now mean past) trend for casual shoes inspired by climbing shoes. Those shoes you show may be inspired by such, although the ones I've seen have a lot more side rubber like a real climbing shoe.
