It is official, I have returned from the abyss. Man, I can't believe they closed the SPAM thread. It could have set a new world record for the longest continuous streak of blatant stupidity in the history of the world!
Anyway, for anybody who cares, here's what happened. My computer blew up, as you all know, and it was totally screwed! Apparently it was caused by a power surge and had no protector thingy in it .
Then the place I took it to got broken into by thieves, and they stole nothing but the RAM! Can you believe that? They did the same on all of the computers there! Maybe they were sheep rustlers
Anyway, I is back now. All is good.
Chris

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
So, Chris L.
You must know that I have a new pet. It's a stuffed monkey (cute, like me), with velcro hands and feet to hang on with. I wear it sometimes as a fashion statement when I'm driving.
I call it my "Motoring Primate." When I put it on, it stays on my back.
Then, according to Tradition, I switch off my brain and HIT THE GAS! I can tell when I'm driving fast enough, my stuffed monkey pees on my shoulder...

Glad you're back, new RAM and all, Chris. When the power supply went out on my computer last year and none was available locally, I was in a state of shock till I got it back going. Luckily I have an old laptop I can use in a pinch, but for example it just won't handle this forum--I tried yesterday during a thunderstorm when I didn't dare have the desktop computer turned on. I could read (barely) but not post.
Hope you will be computer-trouble-free for a long, long time.

Chris, glad you're back. Pete Clark you are the BFC wildman!!! Where might I find my very own motoring primate? Other than on the road of course. I've been to other bicyling.com forums and they just don't compare. This forum is a treasure. Long live BFC!!

G,day Mate!!
Glad to see the Chief Ranter back!
I had a similar problem once, except the only thing that got fried in a thunderstorm was the modem, which the phone company replaced for nothing.

Believe it or not, this didn't actually happen in a thunderstorm. The electrical wiring system on this house is apparently f***ed. I had a light bulb explode yesterday. I think I'm gonna get the hell outta here!

It's a wonder my computer lasts at all--when the refrigerator comes on here, the lights dip in tribute; and when I print on my laser printer, it's like a subtle strobe effect.... The wiring is original to the building, which is probably about seventy years old.

Invest in a UPS I purchased a APC Back-UPS Pro 420 two years ago, and i know it has saved my computers life half a dozen times, pays for its self on the first surge.

Investing in a UPS would probably help my cause quite a bit, but it's all in vain now anyway. I've been told I have to move out. It's a rented place and apparently the owners have settled their divorce (I can declare that revelation all I like now, as they can't really do anything else to me now anyway).

Jon, i would think it would work, my UPS just plugs into the wall, i doubt old wireing (sp?) would make a difference, unless you getting a multi-thousand dollar house ups
