sprung seatpost for a Specialized Crossroads

My girlfriend has a Specialized Crossroads with a sprung seatpost on it. The seatpost has a threaded collar on it that adjusts the spring preload. I've never seen anything like that before, and can't figure out what other function that the threaded collar would serve. Does it do anything else besides adjust the preload?

We don't carry the CrossRoads, but on all the susp. seat posts I have seen the collar, near the top, is to retain the bushing and you adjust the spring with an allen wrench(or in some cases a quarter) by taking the post out of the frame and doing it from the bottom

That is how it was on the older Crossroads, though I haven't been around one in about a year. Pretty standard setup though.

So should the threaded collar be snugged up to the seatpost? There was a slot on the internal portion of the male portion of the seatpost (the damping rod), but it looked like the threaded collar was what set the preload when I looked at it. It sounds like you're suggesting using the damping rod adjustment to set the preload, and then snug down the threaded collar - am I right? And thanks for the help!

Yes. You want the collar hand tight, it will take the play out of the post. You shouldn't need to loosen it to adjust the spring.

Why not a brooks saddle with the springs in it, instead?
