it won't stop raining in hawaii
 

i just want to share with you fine internet junkies that it just will not stop raining here in Honolulu, Hawaii. Right now, it's raining so hard I just can't see out my window. I think this is the end of the world. I'm serious. How do you people deal with it? And do any of you have suggestions for clipless shoes that 1) don't get too wet and 2) dry pretty fast?

I have seen SPD sandals around somewhere. I suppose you could use shoe covers ( probably too hot for Hawaii though ), or gaiters.

I live on Oahu too - ride right through Waikiki on every ride - usually by 3:00 AM.

I've had trouble with the rain too, of course. I managed to get a ride in Wednesday and another last Sunday, but since I normally ride every other day, that is below par.

I'll try again Saturday morning, but the forecast isn't too good.

As for shoes, I just use the Shimano sandals and don't worry about getting them wet.

Kipapa Gulch was a real nice ride this morning. Closed for all the cagers, but I was able to ride through. Amazing how quite it is without any traffic and all 3 lanes just for me.

Big fan blowing on them works pretty well for me.

There are several varieties of booties that go on over the shoe and extend up past the ankle. Then pull you rain pants down over the booties. I like the waterproof fabric ones with neoprene soles, cutout for the "cleat" on the sole, and a zipper on the back for easy entry. For platform pedals I just use a breadbag layered between two pairs of soxs. We are haveing the same rain trouble in Northern California. Set a new record for number of rainy days in March.

Get a kayak. It is about the same on the adrenalin scale as muddy mountain biking. Give your knees a rest!

thanks for the help. the rain has let up for a bit, but i know that when i get back to work on tuesday it'll be the same old story. thunder, lightening and fungus. and those SPD sandals? frickin' $70!

Yep, but those spd sandals are actually the most comfortable sandals of any i've ever worn, spd or just regular.

I wear mine in summer with no socks, and in winter down to below freezing with wool socks and booties, and in pouring rain in january with goretex socks.

For 70 bucks their the most versatlie cycling shoe I have :)

They also seem to last a long time. Like I said, I work mine EVERYWHERE and I think I didn't replace them for over two years. That was because eventualy the heel wore down to the metal frame inside. Everything else was fine. If you only wear them for biking, they aren't going to get much of that wear and tear. And if you wear them or everything, that's still pretty good life for an everyday shoe.
