I agree that a lot of bicyclists are a danger on the road. Going the wrong way, riding 2 and 3 abreast on the highways, and not obeying traffic laws are common occurances around here. The thing that gets me is they do all this without wearing a helmet. I guess they have a death wish.

They do it with helmets to.I cut short my ride yesterday morning because of all the walkers, runners on both sides of the bikepaths going both ways. All i was doing was going around, slowing down, yelling bike.I also had cyclist coming at me on my side of the path, coming out of tunnels 3 abreast into a blind corner.I had them riding in and out of both bike lanes.
Oh,and the worst drivers, they just drive cyclist crazy.

The cars??....Usually Buicks. The drivers??....Sweet, little elderly ladies from about 70 to 100 years old. I have experienced on several occasions what seems to be a trend among them...that being; while driving their "Yank-Tanks" they seem to have no idea where in the "Heck" the right side of their cars are, and they usually, absolutely, no matter what, refuse to cross that dashed line in the middle of the road. On too many occasions I've enjoyed no more than 3-5 inches clearance between my left elbow or knee and the right side of their car, and usually when there is no opposing traffic...this is devilishly scary!

Mini vans and Ford explorers are almost a sure indicator of an individual with few or no driving skills.

In semi-rural Texas, the old farmers in their old pick-ups are usually quite friendly. The new loaded P/U's driven by exurbans commuting to and from their jobs in the cities are deadly. On farm-to-market roads a particular hazard is a tractor rig towing a single-wide home (or two halves of a double wide in a convoy): they hug the right side of the road and completely overlap the shoulder. We get these especially on Sunday mornings; they like to transport when few people are around. An emergency exit onto the grass is sometimes the only option. And if you don't know what a single-wide is, you may not be a redneck.

I don't know about taxi's, but SUV's are the worst in this area. The mentality that allows one to buy a station wagon with a lift kit doesn't allow for other user's of the road.

It seems the worst drivers described deal with the geographical locations were in. Where there are more cars, or trucks, suv's, or pickups, we all complain. Lets look at advertising for a minute. When was the last time you saw a commercial that didnt show a car goin balls to the wall down a narrow mountain highway as if it were a formula 1 racer. When was the last time you saw an add for a 4wheel drive vehicle that wasnt goin like hell on a dirt road??? People dont pay attention to the disclaimers in the adds and feel they can drive just the same way.
Its like mentioned earlier. Only those who cycle appreciate the concerns of a fellow cyclist and yield to them or give them plenty of room. In todays fast paced society, the only person the driver is thinking of is themself. No matter how big, or small the vehicle, there will always be an idiot. We see, or hear this on a daily basis when listening to the traffic reports, or we are on the roads ourselves. A drivers lisence seems to have become a form of revinew rather than a privelage earned by responsibility. Granted, we all make a mistake from time to time reguardless of being on our bikes or in a vehicle. I think the question we need to ask is why isnt there better instruction and law enforcment?? Just think of the money that could be made on traffic violations alone??
For those of us who do own vehicles, we buy what suits us for our needs. No matter what the brand, or make, there will always be an idiot among us.

The worst drivers have to be the Soccermoms or dads in those hugh SUVs. My favorite thing (not) is when they pull up next to you in the bike lane make eye contact and then turn right. This happens on average once a week.
I feel safe on the California mountain roads where during the day the only other vehicles I meet are pickups. I have never had a problem with a pick-up.
The motorcycles on the weekends are terrible and worse than the SUVs (probably weekend warrior yuppies who don't know how to handle a bike). Nothing like having 2 - 20 of them go by you on a mountain pass while playing lets see how close we can come to the cyclist. Saturday was priceless about 50 of these guys were trying ticks and taking pictures, so in one photo you probably have me and an idiot on a motorcycle on one wheel less than a foot from me. This happened 3 times in 2 tens of a mile. I must have presented a photo opportunity.
