Ok I can't figure out where this one would go so why not here. Monday april 24th I was in an accident while cycling I can't tell you what happened as all I remember is being loaded into the ambulance and of being driven away. Anyway I ended up with two subdural hematoma's or bleeding on the brain, a week and a half later i'm out of the hospital and doing ok ((thanks for asking thats sweet of you)). But the thing is I can't taste anything sweet anymore sugar has no taste at all and a pepsi tastes horrible beyond imagination has anyone else out there taken a good knock to the head and lost their sense of taste? and if you did, did it ever come back? This is kinda weirding me out food tastes totally off but if nothing else I guess i'll be able to stick to a diet REAL EASY from now on.

I saw a video of a kid who took a real nasty fall on his roller blades trying some dumb ass stunt. He whacked his head on the concrete so hard that he has since lost his sense of smell permanently. I'd talk to the doctors and get some professional opinions.

You really ought to talk to a doctor.. as soon as possible. I'd hate to have my sense of taste altered for the rest of my life.

A lot of people have a lot of things altered for the rest of their lives. It happens every day. I agree to contact your doctor, but the presumption that a doctor can correct this may or may not be true. I don't know because i am not one.

I do know plenty of people, including close family members that have to live with things for the rest of their lives that most people would hate to. Sometimes there is only one other choice.

You are correct that a doctor may not be able to help this condition, but he/she will be able to tell whether it is a sign of a more serious problem. That's why a doctor should be contacted.

Well I have to see my neurologist on monday as is i'll make sure to ask him then. I was just hoping someone could just lie and say "Yah my sense of taste was screwed up for weeks but it came back strong."

Whether he was or not, he got a brain injury. I don't see how this question is especially relevant to the OP. What are you going to say if he wasn't? "Oh, you got a brain injury because of that." Obviously he got a brain injury, or sugar would taste sweet! I don't see how you could use this information in a way that would be helpful to the OP.

Of course, now this is going to turn into a back-and-forth about helmets. Hoo boy...

No, but it would be interesting to know if he was wearing one or not, just for the sake of knowing. Come on, not everyones intention are to turn this into a helmet vs no helmet debate.

I'd like to know too. One of the doctors in the ER asked me that question yesterday when I was having my dislocated shoulder put back where it belongs. It's just one more datum, not an invitation to lecture or debate.

I broke my left leg real bad last December and was in the hospital for two weeks. Everything I ate tasted terrible. I believe it was cause by the pain killers I was taking. It been four months since my acccident and I have finally got off the pain killers and my taste is almost back to normal.
I can't say for sure it cause my pain medicine but since pain medicine was narcotic I concluded they were the cause.

I've whacked my head a few times doing a bunch of different stuff, I've gone cross eyed, seen spots, lost hearing, heard a loud ringing, etc... some of it lasted a short time, some longer. Give it time, either way, theirs probably not much you can do, and in the worst case that you do lose your taste, just be glad thats all you lost, lot of people aren't so lucky.

I, too, am interested as to whether or not a helmet was worn. Not to debate whether or not individuals ought to wear a helmet; rather, if a helmet was worn and did not adequately prevent a head injury, then perhaps we need to question whether or not our bike helmets are protecting us adequately.

Happened to me in my boxing days and just happened to my step daughter after she took a nasty fall and gave herself a concussion. In time your senses of taste and smell will return, just be patient.

Same here. I had to quit playing football in college from concussions. The last would knock out or off my sense of taste, but it came back. And yeah, I have also noticed that pain killers can deaden your senses too.

Talk to your docs. Might as well get your money's worth.

Don't know about brain/sensory damage, but the times I've cut a nerve and lost feeling (once by accident, once due to surgery) the feeling has come back over time. Nerves do regenerate, but they regenerate very slowly. My thumb (the accidental cut) took somewhere around 6-12 months to feel mostly normal again.

My understanding is some of the healing is done by your body replacing damaged nerves, and some of it is done by your body "rewiring" other non-injured nerves. That's why even when nerve damage is "healed" the sensation isn't always the same as it was before. I'd definitely still recommend talking to your doctor, but if he says there's nothing to be done, don't give up hope. It might take a while, but your sense of taste will probably return.
