So that's what all the fuss is about....

The brooks b17 saddle I ordered came in today and after a short test ride around the block I am amazed by how comfortable it is. I've tried 7 different saddles and those few minutes around the block on the brooks have been more comfortable than any other saddle I've tried :D

Cyclaholic 05-17-06 08:51 PM

You only rode it for a few minutes? most saddles that I have found uncomfortable didn't start hurting untill 30 - 50 minutes riding, except if they're narrower than my sit bones in which case they hurt almost immediately.

With such a short ride and considering that the brooks takes a while to break in maybe you experienced a placebo effect?.... i'm sure it will truly be a very comfortable saddle in time.

I've taken the same short test ride with the other 7 saddles I've tried and with those I immediately knew they weren't going to work, but gave them a shot anyways. The brooks has a completely different feel to it as it was immediately comfortable. I realize it may be too early to tell, but considering how difficult it has been to find a comfortable saddle this looks promising...

Nah that's how it was for me. Right away it felt better. Even when I'd been riding for a bit, before it was broken in and I was used to it, my sit-bone area got sore, but the soreness was still a better soreness than what I'd had previously... you could tell it was a "not used to this" soreness not a "something bad being pushed on" soreness.

Maybe you just have a natural "Brooksbutt".

Obviously, many do! :roflmao:

My tushie, however, is partial to Fizik & Specialized.

I squeezed in a 17 mile after work today and I am beginning to believe I have a "Brooksbutt"

I also thought the brooks felt better than any other saddle from the start(it arrived last week) - I had to adjust my b17 a little bit in terms of getting the nose just right - but except for some initial soft tissue soreness (fixed after adjustment) - i did not notice the saddle at all - it was good enough that I bought a team pro s for road bike (the lenghth is better for me on road bike) and moved my b17 to hybrid - rode both tonight - 6 miles each ( I know that is not a great distance- but I am still getting used to new road bike riding position)- no pain anywhere.

Oh goodie, another Brooks thread! BF members love 'em!

I don't have a Brooksbutt. :D The first month it felt like I was riding a concrete pipe for a saddle. Then one day I suddenly noticed I didn't notice it any more.

Anyone have a Serfas saddle and what do you think of them?

Welcome to the club. If you think it's comfortable now, wait 'till you have a couple thousand pain free miles on it.

I am really surprised that it was so comfortable for you from the start. I bought my first about on Monday (today is Friday). I've ridden the bike I put it on about 50 miles since then. It felt a bit better tonight, but that might be because I wore padded bike shorts instead of regular shorts.

If it wasn't for everyone on here saying it gets better, I probably would have given up already!

I was surprised that it was comfortable from the beginning too. I had read so many things on here about the break in period I was expecting it to be a bit uncomfortable for a while.

My Brooks wasn't that comfortable for the first two rides, but now it's the most comfortable saddle I have. Having said that, I still haven't adjusted the saddle position perfectly. The nose needs to tilt up more and maybe be set back a bit, but I can't get it tilted up more than it is now so now I'm on the lookout for a replacement seatpost.

You may not be able to tell for sure if a saddle is right for you in a few minutes, but you can definitely tell if it's the wrong one.
