It's aliiiiiiiiiiiivvvveeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!
That's right! My green fixie project is now a complete bike!
I went out for an extremely short test ride last night, because it was 11:00 but I couldn't stand the thought of putting it together but not riding it. Observation #1: Fixed gear really isn't that different when you're cruising along. "Coasting" isn't that big a deal as long as you just let your legs go with the pedals. The bike "feels" a lot faster than my commuter, although that could be the thinner tires and the fact that it's an easy 15 lbs lighter. Observation #2: My brakes suck about as much as you'd expect, but if you want to whine at me go do it in my "Where to save money" thread. Observation #3: For some reason I have a hard time at really low speeds. I guess that's when I'm most used to coasting. But as my speed approaches zero, I get very unsteady. My attempts at trackstanding were utter failures. Part of it could be that the brand new clipless pedals are tighter than @#$*(, so I was having trouble unclipping fast enough to be comfortable at really low speeds. Observation #4: Those flipped townie bars SUCK. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too low, even with the taller stem I got. Too far back as well. I'll try flipping them back over, which should correct the height (I compared this to my old bike, seat is about the same height, these handlebars are like SIX inches lower). If they're still too far back I may be going with mustache bars. Observation #5: I need a longer seatpost... and I might get a new seat too. It has a straight-tube post with clamp-on seat... although since I'd probably get the B67, I might as well replace just the seat post first with another straight tube one... then if I ride it for a while and decide this seat has to go, I can get the B66 instead. Observation #6: The headset probably needs to be loosened a sconch. It has a little bit of resistance, I thought it might go away after a bit but it doesn't seem to be inclined to. It was noticable while riding, so I probably need to loosen it just a tiny bit. |
Aw right!
The low speed dilemma = As soon as you learn to use the backpressure that the fixed cog provides, you will be able to creep safely @ 2mph. I have a cheap cyclocomputer in need of a good home, I will save it for you. |
Uh huh. I bet at really slow speeds you're used to pedaling with a little drag on the brakes

This thread is completely useless without pictures.

/\/\/\ x2 ... I hope is not a hoax like that 10,000$ challenge year thing
:D :D :D :D :D :D |
lol... Here's an older pic, I haven't taken any since it's done. I'll try to do that this weekend.
http://jeffa.homedns.org/images/frame.jpg Just realized how old it was, didn't even have the wheels on. OK time for new pics. |
You do realize that there is a ss/fg section, right?
