What foot do you coast with forward?

What foot do you coast with forward? This has been bugging me because I have noticed that I am incapable of using my left foot. Which is funny because I always used my left.

dragracer 05-23-06 11:52 AM

Maybe I'm dumb, but I don't understand the question. :o

Acorn22 05-23-06 12:02 PM

ok. Like your riding down a hill and your standing. What orientation are your feet in? Right or left foot forwards. What foot are you most comfotable to do *technical* stuff.

For me I just loose my balence or something if my left foot is forwards.

edp773 05-23-06 01:48 PM

I have my left foot forward because it is my best leg, and this way I am ready for a quick pedal stroke. I am right handed, but a knee injury on the right leg leaves it weaker than my left leg.

Old Dirt Hill 05-23-06 01:57 PM

Guess I have no idea. I'll try to remember to notice on the ride home tonight.

And then I'll try to remember to post my results here tomorrow.

Seems like a lot to remember, so don't hate me if I forget. ;)

Cheapskate 05-23-06 02:07 PM

Neither. I like to coast with my left foot down at 6 o'clock. This is a problem with left turns at speed for me because I have to consciously tell myself to put the right foot down in left turns to avoid the left pedal from striking the ground.

SouthTJ 05-23-06 02:25 PM

Yeah, I'm a pedal down kinda guy too but I'm not sure which one, I'll have to pay more attention next ride.

DannoXYZ 05-23-06 06:33 PM

I'm not an ambi-turner, so I always have my left-foot forward...

khuon 05-23-06 06:44 PM

In the mountain biking world, it's known as your chocolate foot. Mine's typically my left unless I'm setting up for an aggressive right turn.

Boudicca 05-23-06 08:28 PM

Left pedal down, right pedal up, and probably a little forward. But I can't for the life of me see why it matters.

So why am I answering this post?

+1.

For me, it is a matter of comfort, not safety, to do that.

UAEBiker 05-23-06 10:05 PM

I prefer my left foot down but its not like a problem to have right, its just not as comfortable.

Polonswim 05-23-06 10:59 PM

I said right foot. The OP said when going downhill and STANDING. If I am standing on both pedals, my right foot is the one in front. If I have clipped out of one then the right is out of the pedal and the left is at the six o'clock position.

No, this is too easy. Must...use....powers...for....good..........

And to answer the OP, when I'm coasting, I put my feet on the handlebars.......so I can open my beer...

It might matter to some extent, somwhere I was reading up on diffrent stunts/techniques and they said that the foot you keep forward should be a certain one based on wich is your strong leg and wich way you lean when you do a track stand for optimal balance. I have no clue what link I was looking at tho.

I have a bad habit of left foot down as a road rider, but when I start going offroad im sure thats somthing I will correct quickly or pay the price for it by falling.

fmw 05-24-06 06:22 AM

I always coast with one foot down and one foot up. Either foot. If I am going to turn while coasting, I will pedal to the other foot it that is appropriate for the direction of the turn.

va_cyclist 05-24-06 08:09 AM

Varies depending which way I'm turning -- inside pedal is up, outside is down. On straight road, my left foot probably drops to 6:00 more often.

crtreedude 05-25-06 04:15 AM

Costa Rican roads being what they are, I put one foot at 9 pm and the other at 3 pm so that when (not if) I hit a pothole, my legs are bent and I am off the seat and I don't get launched into outerspace.

When you have a single foot down and straight, hit a bump - and you can send yourself flying.

Riding here is like single tracking - which thankfully I enjoy.

CommuterRun 05-25-06 04:33 AM

I'll have a pedal down at six o'clock, usually the right, but I very rarely coast and prefer to pedal through turns.

Daveonabike 05-25-06 08:41 AM

coasting is for the weak

56/12 and 22/28 05-25-06 08:44 AM

This is the most ridiculous thread I have ever posted in.

Keep it up, sire.

Pee-Ess: Left foot foward.

Halfstep 05-25-06 11:50 AM

I don't know what's more ridiculous. This thread, or me sitting in my chair with my hands held out in front of me and my feet spinning and stopping, spinning and stopping, trying to figure out which one I prefer. At least my coworkers are used to the strange sights seen through my office windows.

BTW: right.

noisebeam 05-25-06 12:14 PM

coast?

hopefully neither

Al

Grand Bois 05-25-06 02:14 PM

Left foot forward feels better balanced to me. I used to skateboard and surf the same way for the same reason. I'd snowboard the same way but I'm too old and my mortgage is too big to be doing things like that.

powers2b 05-25-06 02:19 PM

When I remember to coast I do so with my best foot forward.

Enjoy
