Snot rocket or tissue

On group rides what do you do?
1.Snot rocket
2.Use a Tissue

RainmanP 01-13-03 11:11 AM

I marked tissue, but actually I carry a red bandana in my jersey pocket. It's not that I have a problem with the snot rocket concept, but I always seem to wind up with more on my jersey, mustache, beard and glove than actually hits the ground.

lotek 01-13-03 11:16 AM

The operative word here is "GROUP RIDE".
on solo rides, I launch snot rockets (and don't even
end up wearing em). In a group I spare the
others, and myself the embarrassment of launching onto
whoever is behind me.

roadbuzz 01-13-03 11:36 AM

Well... I don't carry tissue.

In the presence of other riders, I'll drop to the back of the line or separate myself in some other way to prevent collateral damage.

velocipedio 01-13-03 12:09 PM

the trick is to hold on until you rotate to the rear... it can be a big problem if you're #4 in a line of ten and you feel the buildup, though. i just sniffle until i pull off... then i wait until i'm on back... if you fire one when you pull offinto the wind you're either going to hit yourself or a buddy...

SteveE 01-13-03 12:21 PM

Velocipedio describes the etiquette correctly. Furthermore, when you are at the back of the paceline no one sees it when you mess up!

Arsbars 01-13-03 12:30 PM

If I'm riding with a group I wipe it on my glove.. I always wear specialized pro gloves, they have a terry type cloth on top. If not, I suck it in and spit it out :D

Pete Clark 01-13-03 12:37 PM

That's what your mustache is for--keeping it out of your mouth (sort of.)

Giant_racer 01-13-03 12:51 PM

Nothing worse than having a snotty nose and 10 miles to get home to get some toilet paper!!! :o

P. B. Walker 01-13-03 01:37 PM

snot rockets all the way. but then, I guess I've practiced it enough that I can shoot one straight down between my arm and leg. Almost zero chance of it hitting another rider unless they are riding right next to me within 2 feet.

About the only time I won't do it is I know I don't have a ... "full" rocket, so to say. If it's just a very small one it tends to come out as a spray, instead of a compact rocket. In those situations, I just wipe with my glove until I can build up more, or until I'm at the back. Or I'll try sucking it up and then spitting it out.

I don't do group rides but do snot rockets. About 8 or 9 months out of the year I have allergies. Some days they're not bad and others just terrible. I can usually tell what kind of day it will be the first hour I'm awake, then take meds for it. Other days I may get a sneak attack in the middle of a ride.
Just thought I'd share........

ewww... it's too much detail for me far too many males on this site can't u just tell :(

Master the 100% hands-free snot rocket. It's a skill as important as track standing.

That's nothing. I once actually vomited while I was riding (true story).

I usually carry a handkerchief with me when I ride (I call it the spanky-hanky), but often on solo rides I can't be bothered getting it out of my jersey pocket, so at those times Ijust fire snot rockets.

Gee, DO tell!

I'm in the habit of taking kleenex with me in the event I need toilet paper and also because I have a touch of allergies. I've actually become adept at getting the kleenex out of my back pocket while riding, and blowing my nose, not while descending a hill though. If I'm wearing long sleeves, I tuck some into the cuff of my sleeve and have it at the ready.

Snort and spit is my chosen method. I find I can get them about ten to fifteen feet off to the side, unless an SUV happens to blocking my trajectory.

If I am on a group ride, I will try to ride at the back and give a very good one and I see to it that I don't have anybody behind me, but if I am alone, I just let it go, whocares, the motorist won't mind it, I think:D :D :D

Walker, you could write a snot-rocket manual with good authority.
I think you really know what you are talking about!

Ok, here's the truth: I always snort the snot and swallow. Much easier and tastier than trying to spit. Mmmmm, good!

A friend of mine said "if you don't hurl a couple times in the year, you're not training hard enough.

Snot Rocket. I tried tissue, it kept blowing away. In winter, with the baklava, glasses and mittens, tissue is impossible. I do think I'll try the snort & spit method, it might be more femine.

On cold days my nose runs a LOT. I think that it must be condensation inside the nose walls. Do others have this problem?

I've considered attaching one of those retractable key chains onto my handlebars and then attaching the hankie to it. When my nose starts running (again) I can pull the hankie up to my nose and then just let go. The key chain will retract the hankie back to the handlebars where it will blow in the wind and dry a little. What do ya' think?

I learned the snot rocket technique from my grandfather when I was just a litte kid. I remember watching him work on a cold day, and he'd take his knuckle, close of one nostril, and launch the snot out the other. Then he'd proceed to the opposite nostril. I've proudly taken after my grandfather's tradition, and it's come very useful to me in running, biking, and other occasions.

Back when I played ice hockey, I learned to spit out thick saliva to help me breathe better. This too has helped me in athletic competitions. I can launch a wad of spit at least 15 feet if I get a good breath behind it. The distance is handy when you have a group of riders behind you, you can aim it forward and to the side, it clears the whole peloton by far.
