Bicycle Remodeling
 

Hi folks,

I recently purchased a beach cruiser for my girlfriend and we're not satisfied with the color, so we were thinking of making a project out of it together and painting, but we're not sure how to get started...i was told that sanding the frame down would be the start, but the frame is brand new paint, no chips, rust, etc. we want to remove the decals on there so we were thinking alcohol, from there what kind of paint? Spray paint with 2 or so coats, of course putting a spary on primer first? and then to give it the shiny finish, clear coat? if anone can help me by encouraging my process or changing or just giving me a whole new process, I would highly appreciate it...

I'd start with an older frame, especially for your first attempt. You'll learn a lot in the process and your second project bike is going to come out a lot better. I can't think of anything that I've done in my life that I couldn't do faster and better the second time.

Sell the bike and buy another in a color that appeals to you both. Once you start this project, the value of the bike will plummet and you will likely be stuck with something that you find less attractive than what you already have.

The value of the bike will be determined by how much they love it. I don't think the OP is painting it to sell it; he's painting it to make himself and his girlfriend happy. Go for it.

The best and least damaging way to remove all the old paint and sometimes rust is to have the frame commercialy acid dipped. Your nearest auto parts store can direct you to a place that does this. It will cost 20 bucks and be well worth it.
