How should I approach this?

Since I moved to my current apartment about 6 months ago I noticed that there is a junky road bike sitting in the parking basement. Now, not until recently I started to bike again, so I pretty much ignored the bike until tonight.

It's a purple Bianchi Volpe with lugged frame, and it's in my size! The chain is rusted solid, but besides that it's in a pretty good condition.

Now here's the condition:
1) The bike is "parked" in front of one of the tenant's spot
2) Judging from the chain and flat tire, it hasn't been moved for quite a while.
3) It has a cable & padlock that secured the front wheel to the frame, but the bike itself is not secured to anything.

Now what would you do if you're in my position? Is it OK to try to contact the tenant whose parking spot is in front of the bike?

I'm gonna talk to the apt. manager anyways tommorow to see if she knows anything about it (it could be a leftover from a previous tenant), I just wanna know your opinions on this.

Thomas

Do both as you stated, try to contact the tenant & speak to the apartment manager. Remember, the condition of that bike be it good, bad or whatever in no way makes it "legal" to jack it. Not that I'm saying you will mind you, just a lil' friendly reminder.

Believe me, its like one of those Tom & Jerry where Tom has a devil and an angel on each shoulder.

But I've had my bike stolen in the past, no way I could to do that to another person.

You: Is that your bike downstairs?

Them: Yes, yes it is.

You: Care to part with it for $30?

Hot chick answers

You: *choke* uhhhh... There is an old bicycle downstairs in your spot. Is that yours?

Hot chick: It's my ex boyfriends

You: , Care for a tune up... of the bike I mean, unless you're up for that sort of thing *stupid grin*

Meh, the way I see it, it could work out well. Unless Said hot chick is replaced with bubba the former inmate who is a tad lonely this summer :-\

Just wear your running shoes

Never hurts to ask, otherwise you never know.

In this case the condition of the bike speaks for itself that its not in use.

Yeah this sorta thing comes up every once in a while. A smallish percentage of BF users feel it's OK to "liberate" (by which I mean "steal") a bike just because it's unused or unrideable, but most folks say do it the legal way... Talk to the apartment manager, the tenant whose you think it might be, or the cops... there's a legal process for claiming abandoned property and "just taking it" is not it.

If the apartment manager and/or tenant know nothing about it, contact the cops. They'll probably come collect it, wait some period of time to see if it's claimed, and then give it to you (they may even cut the lock for you).

Bianchi Volpe. My girlfriend rides an older one. Great touring bike. A bit heavy and slightly less speedy than most road bikes. Good luck with it - that'd be a fun fixer upper.
