Milk Crates?

I know this is a silly question, but where could you find milk crates? I live in LA and I can't say I've seen any lying around.

I need one to strap on to my grocery getter.

bennyk 06-23-06 12:00 AM

I have gotten them from work or found them kicking around buildings. There are usually mountains of them outside dairy distributors, if you live in that kind of place. Be aware that "improper use is prohibited," whatever that means.

Grocery stores - sweet talk the bag boy into grabbing one for you.

Sandie 06-23-06 06:03 AM

You can purchase milk crates at most discount or office supply stores. I just purchased some at Office Max- $5.99 ea. Might keep you out of trouble with the law....or the bag boys.

shakeNbake 06-23-06 10:17 AM

Hmm. Thanks guys.
I think I'll take a look around the grocery store. If I couldn't find one, I'll probably buy one. I'm not in the mood to seduce a bag boy.

don't steal one from a dairy, please. buy one at OfficeMax or OfficeDepot

powerhouse 06-23-06 02:22 PM

A friend of mine told me about how he "borrowed" some that were piled up behind the rear of a supermarket...When he went to give them back, a lone supermarket worker told him not to return them all at once!

Ikea also probably sells them.

The crates you can buy for like $5 are cheap and flimsy. Real milk crates are much, much better.

josh7337 06-23-06 09:06 PM

Ive seen them behind convenience stores.

Little Darwin 06-23-06 09:23 PM

These claim to be strong, and the same as real milk crates:

http://www.containerstore.com/browse...0136&CATID=243

These also look very strong, and are a little bigger. This is what I would buy because of the size and steel band.

Although they are out of stock, they also sell one that is half as tall.

Any of these come with no added negative karma for stealing.

If you simply must have on with a dairy label for the effect, then buy one from the dairy, or paint a false dairy logo on one you buy elsewhere.

shakeNbake 06-23-06 10:23 PM

I got one, asked the loading guy at the back of Ralph's, told me to take the whole stack (about 5 of them), I just need one.

I just realized the side says something along the line of "Illegal if used for other than the intended purpose", wtf?

It's pretty heavy and really sturdy with aluminum enforcement on the top side.

I wonder if they can make one out of carbon-fiber? That would be the ultimate OCP add-on.

DieselDan 06-24-06 01:24 AM

I've got a stack in my garage.

Because the milk crate belongs to the dairy whose name is on the side. It is their property and is supposed to be returned to that dairy for reuse. I have never heard of anybody being charged with having a milk crate, but I suppose there always is a first time.:p The way I look at it, is that at least the milk crates are being reused and the milk being shipped in throway carboard boxes. Frito Lay does the same thing with their boxes, reuses them.

Aaron:)

I'd like to try those low-rise plastic soda crates bungeed to a rear rack. Looks like they'd have excellent provision for tiedowns.

These are also exactly the right depth for storing DVD's. I'm told.

Whenever I see somebody using a milk box on their bike or motorcycle I question their integrity. Are
people that poor they have to steal a box to carry their junk around?

+1

Unfortunately, this is true. Get a real milk crate.

roadfix 06-27-06 01:24 PM

Hmm.....I see them behind Ralph's market all the time.

Aaron:)

The local universities did a sweep of the dorms recently (with encouragement from the dairy industry no doubt) and charged any student that had an illegal crate.
Of course, there was plenty of warnings posted all over campus so there was a sudden "availability" of crates until after the sweep.

Cyclist01012 06-27-06 02:51 PM

From A friend who works for a dairy. If you get cought by the wrong person and that person is having a bad day its a 150.00 dollar fine for each crate the you have. And the same person told me that ocal Judges will give police seach warrents to check you house. Dairys get mad a replacing their property.

Our Pizza Bike (Helen) at work has one. Its great for grabbing lunch but too flimsy for carrying much else.
