I paid $35 at Nashbar--- it was on mega clearance. I don't think they carry them anymore. I would buy an OnGuard lock at REI or somewhere cheap if I had to pay full price.

it's awesome..... it's not really an upgraded version of the 3000 though..... it is a mini with 18 mm thick shackle instead of 16 mm on the 3000. As a mini it is even harder to jack...... it is perfect for locking to parking meters..... it's a very impressive lock.... it's heavy but because it's a mini it's pretty easy to carry..... at 4.6 lb, not as heavy as a chain. I add a onguard brute mini for the front wheel and I feel very safe.

For those interested, the extra 2mm of shackle constitues another 27% more steel to cut through (compare the squares of the radii). Maybe an engineer can remark on the comparative bending strength, but I think that goes up as the square or maybe the cube of the radius too. It looks like a tough little lock, anyway

Sounds good but how is the lock keyed? As in what shape is the key square cut round keyed multi sided flat key etc?

Personaly id never own a round keyed lock their worthless theres not a single round key that can be defeated in secounds (not talking the ink pen trick here but useing similar meathods to defeat them)

Hi there - let me jump in for a minute and see if I can help out with some confusion here.

filtersweep - if your lock came with a bracket then I'm sorry to say it probably isn't a New York Fahgettaboudit U-lock. It's too heavy for the bracket we have now - we're working on that! Also, it's only been out for a couple of months so I wouldn't think anyone would have it on clearance yet. Let us all know if they do, though, because $35 for a New York Fahgettaboudit U-lock? Yikes! Share the wealth with your fellow forum members!

nova - Kryptonite has not sold any product with a tubular cylinder in almost two years. It's a disc-style cylinder, like the standard New York Lock, but it has more discs and a unique coding system. No worries there.

wearetheborg - if you want a tough lock that still fits in your back pocket, this is a great little lock.
No matter what you choose, don't leave your bike unlocked for even one more day. Go get a lock before a thief gets your bike.

Hey Donna, is Kryptonite still replacing the tubular-cylinder locks, or is that over with? I have an older Evolution2000 with that kind of cylinder, which I no longer trust except as a secondary lock, but I didn't find out about the issue for a while

The Fahgettaboudit lock is too new to appear in any published lock tests that I've seen, but I'm betting it will finish at the top of the list when it is tested. The New York u-lock is "gold" rated, and does exceptionally well in tests that use the methods that crooks out on the street actually use, but the Fahgettaboudit has a even thicker shackle, and less room to insert effective breaking or leverage tools. Tests are likely to show it is the strongest lock readily available in the USA.

I have used a similar sized lock with mountain bikes, and the lock should fit around the rear wheel with typical tires. But, with a mountain bike tire, you will be limited to locking to smaller poles, as the tires fills most of the available space.

Yep, that's the snag with mini locks...they don't work very well with mountain bikes due to having to find the right spot to lock it to. For a mountain bike, taking your chances with a standard sized lock, or going to a heavy chain like the fahgeddaboudit would be a better option.

Where do you live and where will you be locking your bike? This has a lot to do with what kind of lock you buy.

In general the Onguard brand of locks tend to be less expensive than Kryptonite, but just as good for 99.9% of people.

EDIT: After having the locking mechanism freeze on three Onguard locks I rescind the above statement.

Go to a hardware store and get a no brand chain and lock equal to Kryptonite in thickness. You might be better off as a Kryptonite chain is worth $20 or so used. One case I know of, someone left the key in a Krytonite lock. The lock, not the bike was stolen.

Find a rusted stripped frame chained by a kryptonite chain. Cut the lock and keep the chain.

There are many metal objects resembling a bike lock for around $30...most can be opened in about five seconds.

One of the few locks in that price range to past rigorous tests at the "silver" level at Soldsecure.com is the OnGuard Bulldog. The Bulldog Mini TC is the best compact lock u-lock that is easily found in the USA.

Thanks, I couldn't find the one you specified in that page but I'll remember that those are good locks.
Mainly I want to prevent someone just snatching by bike, it would be cool if I could add some little brake or something that's semi-hidden that I can leave on when I'm away.

The idea about the chain from a hardware store is a VERY BAD idea. If the hardware store can easily cut the chain so can a theif.

As Alan said, if you would like to keep your bike pony up the cash for a decent U lock. A search of the forums will turn up many threads on just what lock is best for you.

Yep, the chain used in quality bike chain locks are made from a special hardened alloy, designed for it's cut resistance.

I heard nautical supply depots may have a suitable chain, but it will cost you in the end as much as one of the chain locks out there. I know Avenir used to make a killer chain lock for $25-30. I still have mine, tough as nails, but heavy too. They used a lock on it that was very similar to Abus's captive shackle padlock.
