How to wheelie

How do you wheelie a bicycle? A sustained one I mean, where you just ride along on the back wheel. Can any bike do it? Any rider?

Not by itself.

No. I personally know several riders that have never even tried.

Seriously... pull back on the handlebars while accelerating...

Staying up requires practice, and is accomplished by small adjustments in pedal pressure/acceleration and body position.

In effect, you become a unicyclist on a freewheeling unicycle, and with practice can even turn corners... I used to be able to, but that was many years ago... and I wasn't great at it then, but I had an old middle weight with 26" wheels, a high rise bar and a banana seat. It took very little effort to get it up, and once I found the balance point, it just took practice to keep it there.

Finding the balance point, and learning to adjust without over adjusting just takes time. It can be done on any bike, but some do get up easier, and may be easier to practice on.

Do not forget about the rear brake in case you start to fall backwards. When using the rear brakes be prepared for the front end to come down hard until you learn to feather the brake.

Some people can pop a wheelie by powering the front up and sustain it for a distance area. To wheelie a long ways takes finding the balancing point and keeping in that balance. Not everyone has good balance and some bicycles balance better than others.

It is possible to do a wheelie on any bike, but some are easier to wheelie than others. Word of advice - don't try to learn on a bike with clipless pedals. Also, it is easier to wheelie uphill rather than downhill.

You need to pivot your weight over the rear hub so the closer the hub to your centre of gravity, the easier it will be.
Bikes with long chainstays are hard to wheelie as are small bikes with steep seat-tube angles.
Big guys on big bikes are usually well placed for wheelies.

My life will not be complete until I can ride a wheelie on my 26" commuter!

Some day...

Looks easy!

...maybe not.

it's easier to start practicing while going up a slight incline

just pedal the rear wheel underneath you and try balance

it takes practice, like riding a unicycle
