Will switching to this new slick make a noticeable difference?
My 1.4" Tom slicks are wearing out due to the commuting I've been doing this summer. My commute sucks, there are few actual stretches where you can just go. It's crossing streets and waiting for lights for 8.5 miles. So in an attempt to shorten it, I was thinking of buying the 1" Tom slick tire instead. My LBS does not carry these in stock though, only the 1.4's. So before I order them, do you think the 1" slick will make a difference?

It probably will make a difference, but I don't have experience with slicks that narrow so I'm not sure how much difference there will be (I did the opposite going from 1.5" to 1.95" slicks). If you do make the switch, just make sure your rim can accomodate a 1" slick

Yes, they'll make a noticeable difference, the 26 x 1's will give a much harsher ride. I've used them both, and put it this way: I'm currently running the 1.4's on my mtb "road" wheels..........and btw, I really like the Tom Slicks. I've used LOTS of 26" slicks, and those are my favorites for commuting around town. I've even done some 50+ mile rides on them (the 26 x 1.4's)-

My trike came with Primo Comet Kevlars on it, 26 x 1.5. Found these at the Hostel Shoppe which are designed the same as the Comets but come in 26 x 1.0. Very mild tread:
...and excellent wear properties. I've put better than 500 miles on my trike, hit glass and debris gallore, and you can't tell. It is a like new tire. And it's 100psi capable. I'd definitely pay the extra for the kevlar if you hate fixing flats.

I have no complaints about my Tom SLicks, they are excellent tires. I think the old manufacturer based in Korea was better than the current though. Still, I've put a lot of miles on these tires and run over plenty of glass. 700 miles this summer commuting, got my first flat due to glass yesterday My rear tire was wearing thin anwyays. Oh well, it had a good and prosperous life.
I think I will try the 1" Tom slick. I know my ride will be harsher. For the most part the roads I go on are pothole free, even freshly paved.
