So i'm riding my bike on a multi-use track thats a 7 mile loop. Come up on a jogger in the middle going the same way as me. I yell on your left as i move to the left. She goes left all the way over and i yell again on your left and she moves more and runs into my side. We both go down. These rules of the road are posted around the track about on your left. Guess what,its my fault and i pay her medical. Yep,it was on J Judy.

I've never hit anyone yet, but fortunately, the paths here are BIKE paths, and cyclists have the right of way (for all the good it does...).

If its posted in the rules then I would fight it. Shouldn't be too hard to win.

My state is the same. All it really does is frustrate the 6 people who understand the rules of the path.

Soon the path near me will be connecting with the next state, Then it will switch to an MUP. The last time I was on the path that will be connecting in the next state I saw a sign that says "Bikes ride on left"
I have no idea how to translate that? The signs on the path in my state say "pedestrains walk on left facing bikes". I understand that one anyway. The basic idea was just copy the rules of the roads.

I think I'm going to set up an Emergency room somewhere near the state border. I'll be rich.:)

She was on last night and he had taken a pic of the posted rules and she didnt even want to look at them so i guess they dont mean anything. I to ride on a BIKE PATH but everyone else inc all the high school track teams use them and its the bikes that are pushed off the paths.

I saw Judge Judy couple of times. She is the most arrogant ****** bag ever! Fight it in a real court. Pedestrian was in the wrong. Also it sounds like she ran in to you, while you were parallel to her, when she moved left.

The problem with "On your left!" is that its like "get down!" or "look out!". People think you're commanding them to take quick action instead of just making a statement about your location. I had this happen once (no crash though)and have said "I'm passing on your left" ever since. If that's too many words to say, a bell or horn gives peds a fair warning withoug saying a word.

yep some people think "on your left" means "get on your left" or something. So I say "howdy" and slow down, if they don't look like they're going to move i pass on wherever is available. my dad says "good morning" or "nice day out isn't it?" i've often thought of having really long things to say just to mess with people i.e. "didja catch the game last night whooowhee i thought i was gonna have a spell i aint seen ball played like that in a dogs age i tell ya what!" by then the jogger should be stopped and staring at you like an idiot.

No, the jogger or pedestrian will stop, jump right in front of you, and say "Huh?"

This is why I slow down and quietly pass them.

I found ringing a bell does nothing...so just err on the side of caution, slow down, and overtake carefully.

I'm as confused as some people are here. Who is this he? Were you actually involved?

BTW, are you doing the GMR ride next Saturday with us?...:)

This is why you should approach peds and runners as fast as you quietly can and just as you pass along side make a loud train whistle noise (WHOOOOOOOO-WHOOOOO) :D

Seriously though, the onus for passing safely is always on the person doing the passing. Regardless of any type of vehicle, and regardless if a vehicle is involved or not.

I was watching J Judy and this was one of her cases.

On your left works with most cyclist and mostly not with everyone else. The problem is when they are in the middle you have to guess which way they will move and slowing down to pass and i'll never get 5 miles as the paths are full of non-cyclist and when school starts,the fricken track teams use them and they use both lanes and DO NOT MOVE.

Yeah I've had no luck with yelling either. I usually slow way down and click my brake levers to try and get their attention.

If I say anything, I say, "Passing". Sounds more informational and less like a command.

I do the slow down and click the brake lever also, or if im on my mountain bike i click the grip shifters and they normally look back and move over with no problems.

I had a drunk guy that was walking down a path weaving from side to side recently, i tried to guess which side he was heading for (guessed right) and i moved left and as soon as i got near him he lurched way left (on his own without seeing me) and i came within about 6" of him and i rode off the side of the path in the dirt and back onto the path. i said sorry anway though even though i felt he was at fault.

I have no problem slowing down and making some kind of noise to get past people but its the ones that walk right down the middle of the path 3 people wide with a dog off leash (you have to leash your dog here) and they don't even bother to look back even if your making noise and/or yelling that annoy me.

It makes you want to do a wheelie right into their back. I never would though, i would never hurt anyone like that. (just wishfull thinking sometimes)

Now don't get me started on the ones that think a public walking/bike trail is just a place to let their dogs crap right on the cement trail. (sorry i went a little OT)

Depending on my mood I will either: clear my throat, click the brake lever, ring the bell on my handlebar, call out "passing on your left" or do nothing and slowly and quietly ride by. The bell seems to be the most effective and seems to be the friendliest as well. Most people seem to really like the bell, especially the little ones. :lol:

I took a velodrome racing class and they taught us to yell "stay" when passing anyone. If you say it loud enough it really sounds like a harsh command and eliminates all ambiguity.

Never heard that one. I like it. The main problem is the delay in processing the verbal information, most cyclist get too close and expect instant response. It can't happen. I use "passing" to simplify things and yell in time for a reaction before I pass, it eliminates the right/left dilemma part of the time.. Have you used "stay" on pedestrians?

If the fricken walkers would just go straight,we could pass them without a problem but i swear the act like they are the only ones around and just go where ever.

C'mon guys look on the bright side, at least they're nicely padded with soft flesh - perfect for breaking your fall :)

I have worked out that if I'm approaching them from behind and there's room to pass then my bike is stealthy enough that I say nothing and just wizz by. If the path is blocked by 3+ walking abreast I yell "BIIIIIIIIKE" very loudly and forcefully (I CAN yell, beleive me) even the I-podders often hear my yell.

One thing tho, I always slow way down when there's young kids involved - theyre just unpredictable, and I couldn't forgive myself if I hit a kid regardless of whose at fault.
