Holw Cow! I work in a bike shop now!

Today, I began my career at the local bike shop. And let me tell you, am I ecstatic!

Things haven't been going well as of late for me; what with not being able to find a job anywhere. Then I decided on a whim to send an e-mail to a local bike shop. I had been in there a couple of times and thought it was okay; nothing fancy but a bike shop nonetheless.

So a week or two go by with no response from the bike shop. I was freaking out because I had no money, no job, and a girlfirend that wants to take a cruise in 6 months.

Then I received an e-mail from the head honcho telling me to give him a call at the shop. I did, and then I went in for a visit. Four days later (today) I went in for a try out.

The manager told me that I'd probably be there for justa couple of hours to see if I could perform some repairs and maybe put together a bike or two.

I ended up staying the entire day. I repaired 6 bikes, put together two and began rebuilding an ancient bike. Got to listen to Hendrix while I wrenched.

The boss loves me. The guy I replaced took forever to put together one bike, so I am very appreciated --- and it's only my first day!

The best part is that they are looking for someone to learn the ropes behind the retail aspect of the shop, and be able to repair and build bikes so that eventually they will get their own store!!! This person could be me!!! (hope, hope)

Anyhow, I just wanted to share my exhiliration of not only re-entering the work force but of also finding something that I truely love doing.

Lonestar - take a bow my friend. It's great to hear a success story and we all share your enthusiasm. Great to hear that your new boss appreciates your good work. Now the girlfriend can really plan the cruise. Enjoy both to the full.

Many of us would have to admit that you are living out a fantasy that we can only dream about. I got into cycling late (Iwas @27) after years of running and have always wanted to work in a bike shop. If I could only figure out how to support my family while wrenching at a shop, man I would be there.

Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you.
Good Luck.

Way to go Lonestarcyclist!!!! I just love hearing about people getting to do what they really want to do...and getting paid for it! It seems to me that you might make this shop a better bike shop. Keep the enthusiasm and joy.

Now, if only I could find a way to get paid for what I love to do!

TLN 03-04-03 11:59 AM

Awesome! Now you are going to get paid for what most of us do for free! Congrats on the new job!

What shop? I'm in Dallas and will send some $$ your way when I can.

lonestarcyclist 03-04-03 08:46 PM

WOW!!! What a response! I am loving the job at the bike shop! Today, I built some bikes and learned a lot. I thought I knew how to adjust derailleurs but it turns out that there is a better way to do it.

Today, I went in the back storage area amongst all the new bikes and just stood there, giddy as a school boy. I still can't believe that I have my dream job.

I impressed the head honcho today by knowing how to true a wheel. I explained how a cycling computer works to an older lady. I rode a BMX bike that I built around the store. I got to snip cable housings. I greased brake cables. I used a fourth hand. I found out what the third hand is.

My job is so cool!

Thanks for all of the "atta boy" and other nice things y'all have said. We are an awesome group of people and I wish that each and every one of you get that one thing you really want, if you do not already have it.

Oh yeah, the shop is Cycle Spectrum, on Mason Rd in Katy, Texas. If you're heading west out of houston towrds Katy, you'll exit Mason and hang a left. you'll pass two lights and before the third you'll see the shop on the right side.
I''ll be the guy back in the shop wrenching to the 1812 overture.
