Reverse steering bike
 

Hey guys, i'm going to make a reverse steering bike over the holidays, which is in a few weeks time.

has anybody here made a reverse steering bike?

are they hard to ride?

where do i get those cogs for it from?

the only problem i've got is finding the cogs to use. do you know where i'd be able to buy two that interlock nicely?

i've got steel and bikes and a welder so i'm all set, just the bloody cogs

You might try a machine shop. Buying from them would be pretty expensive, but they can probably direct you to a good chop-shop/salvage yard.

Also, once you master riding it, you can clean up at any carnivals that come through town. They limit prizes to something like one-win-a-day. However, the biggest loot up there is usually an electric scooter. If you carry out an electric scooter every day for a week or so, your e-bay income could grow substantially ;)

Take the picture to a couple of mechanics or auto parts stores.

I'll bet there are cogs for transmissions, differentials or some other application that would work fine for this.

Now if you really want to be different you could make a 2 to 1 ratio with the gears, or maybe a 1 to 2. Why not experiment with the gear ratios. Would it work to use friction rather than gearing, ie rubber rollers against each other.

Now you'll be able to counter-steer even on slow turns....:p

I am all for bizzare and irrational, but why would you want that?

It's to leave it unlocked on a college campus while you're set up with a video camera, just outa sight. Make sure to put it on a breakless track bike.

Maybe add single-speed gearing too? Then the would-be thief will have to be in good shape to get the bike moving... and be in better shape to stop it.

As for gears, I'm pretty sure some CNC shops can easily stamp those out for you if you supply them with a CAD file... although I've not messed with AutoCAD in a while, it shouldn't be too hard to spec out what type of gears you are desiring.

I've not tried that system but sure would like to. I can ride a regular bike while sitting on the handle bars facing rearward. At first this takes a while to get used to because it does feel like you have to reverse steer. I don't think having no brakes would make any difference to the unknowing rider; they would not make it 5 feet without losing balance.

It is not too hard to ride one, if you cross your arms first...
