sheldonbrown.com down?

I tried from work and from home and I can not log into www.sheldonbrown.com . Has anybody else had this problem? I get a 404 error loading his page, pinging his domain gets no response and doing a trace route shows that the request is at least getting out from my ISP.

I'd normally not give that much background but doing a quick forumsearch to see if anybody else had this problem revealed a handful of people refering to specific pages on sheldonbrown.com this evening, telling me that they don't have this issue.

Anybody else having this problem?

operator 09-14-06 10:30 PM

Seems to be down at the moment for me as well.

Blue Order 09-14-06 10:33 PM

Down for me too.

SouthTJ 09-15-06 08:18 AM

Still down. So is www.sheldonbrown.org

Identity Crisis 09-15-06 08:21 AM

Eep! I'm glad I'm not the only one.. hopefully Sheldon, the web guru that he is, will be all over that issue once it's discovered.

larue 09-15-06 08:22 AM

I can't access the site either.
If you need to look something up just use Google and view the cached paged.

Hopefully Sheldon will be back up soon. Perhaps he is updating the design of the site?

My sheldonbrown.com site has been down since sometime yesterday morning. Netcetra, my hosting company, sez it's a probem with their firewall. They promised to get it back up by 5 pm Eastern time today...

P.S. anybody got any good recommendations for reliable, affordable "virtual server" hosting for a laaaaarge site with mucho traffic? Need at least 2 gb of space, current traffic is around 40 GB/month, also subdomains...

Sheldon,
That is a common question on Slashdot. There should be reams of current info there.

I've had pretty good luck with lunarpages.com, though they may have grown too big lately. They mostly use Linux servers, so if you need a Windows IIS host, I would not recommend them.

pair.com will do 3GB of disk and 200GB/month of bandwidth for $30/mo or so. Cheap, reliable, etc. I've been a customer for years.

As long as you aren't trying to do anything really strange with your site, they're great.

Reliable and affordable? Pick one.
My last web host went silent one afternoon. No one was able to even reach them by phone any more. I signed up with 1and1.com and had the whole site moved over in 20 minutes. (Admittedly didn't have to move 2 gb of data though...) Can't recommend those guys, except to say they have been OK for last 3 weeks.

For situations like this, maybe you could keep your site at 2 cheap web hosts. When one of them goes down, update the DNS registry to the other site. That takes about 5 minutes if you have your domain(s) registered with an independent company like Network Solutions.

Unless both go down at the same time...

I'm using Yahoo for my web stuff. Its fairly inexpensive, and I've had good reliability so far. However there are many other providers out there.

cs1 09-16-06 02:57 AM

4:55 AM EST still down. This appears serious, anyone hear about a denial of service attack?

Tim

Not a shill...

Not a shill, just a customer. I have no financial interest whatsoever in any hosting provider right now.

(I did work in the ISP industry in the '90s, but none of those companies are still around - it's really hard to make money off dialup)

Our Website http://sheldonbrown.com/ http://harriscyclery.com/ has been down mostly since Thursday morning September 14.

According to the folks at Netcetra, who host our "virtual server" it was attacked by a criminal who hoped to steal credit card numbers, and managed to hack the passwords and enter the site. Fortunately, there were no credit card numbers on that site (we use a separate, securely encrypted site, http://harriscyclery.net for our shopping cart system. That site uses the Verisign system and there is no reason to believe it is vulnerable.)

Our main site is being rebuilt by Netcetra, and will probably be moved to a new, more secure server.

Very sorry for the inconvenience, but repairs are proceeding as fast as they can.

Fortunately, email is still working, both my personal email: captbike (at) sheldonbrown.com and the order department at the shop: order (at) harriscyclery.net

You also can still access our online catalog at http://harriscyclery.net

Thanks for your patience...

Thanks, Sheldon. I hope your extensive written knowledge has been/can be recovered. What a loss that would be.

Hey Sheldon,

I host kenkifer.com and a few other smaller sites on a VPS with SLhost.com, uptime has been 100% for the last few months. http://www.slhost.com/vps_solutions.html

Good luck with the servers. I think I'll go change my root passwords for the month now. :)

We use Netfirms for my wife's bridal shop. So far it has been great. We had a problem a couple of weeks ago, emailed them and they responded ASAP, turns out we had some bad code that was causing a problem.

Sorry to hear this Sheldon....your site is one of the few sites left that showed the internet as it was before the internet goldrush began and screwed things up. By that I mean, a fantastic resource of information, where there is tons of meat, and little if any advertising to annoy the visitor.

I did notice the site is back up now...sweet!
