Yup, one a year for a complete teardown. Drive train cleaning when required. Individual component cleaning and adjustment also when required. I do all the work myself.

The second time a bike needed all that , I'd think about getting a new one. They do improve as time goes on, you know. bk

Mine get a complete tear down based on the use. Some more than others. My main commuter was a Raleigh 3sp Sports. In 24 years it has had 2 complete overhauls and is overdue for one right now. I have a 20 year old Giant Excursion that has only been ridden maybe 500 miles and is nowhere near ready for an overhaul. I have a brand new Redline 9.2.5 that I am going to tear down this weekend, because I don't think they used enough quality grease in it at the factory:rolleyes: I do my own work as much as possible. It seems no matter what I pay someone to do I usually end up having to redo it myself to get it done right. So I just save the time, money and agravation and do it myself the first time....just takes a bit longer for me to get around to it.:p

You let you're LBS do it for you? Looks like it's time for you to learn something about bike mechanics...

Mine was too from 1972 -1997. I think I put a few drops of oil in the hub every other year or so. Yup, that's it for maintenance. Worked fine for my daughter in Gerrmany too for the next 5 years where we left it.

Depends on use, wear, mileage, bike, etc... but if you think it's time for a lube/wash it generally is.

I do everything myself. The frequency is based on an inexact formula that uses miles, moisture exposure, frame material, time since last service, time availability, and enthusiasm. Oh, and although I work hard to avoid it, I think some favoritism is going on.:rolleyes:

Sometimes they just tell me they need it.

I also use the excuse to upgrade. :D

There seems to be at least 2 of our stable that get the treatment every season. Last year was busy.

First, a relative needed a bike for cycling Cycle North Carolina so I bought, overhauled and repaired a well used Marin Point Reyes.

The steel Bianchi with only 2100 miles last year got it because it got 3 solid days of touring in a real tropical storm (Tammy) including a night outdoors in the rain.

My S.O.'s Cannondales' well used 105 group (3500 miles last year/7000 miles total) received serious cosmetic damage in a horiffic crash. This bike also survived the monsoon. My estimation that it needed an overhaul. And in my estimation she needed an upgrade, primarily because her new prowess deserved it. But I admit other motives.

Fortunatley I had a nice one year old Ultegra 9 group with only 2100 miles. Problem was, it was on my Litespeed. Bought a new Ultegra 10 group for the Litespeed. Problem solved!

And finally, I overhauled and repaired my S.O.'s older Trek 820, converting it into a campus commuter.

5 is enough for one season!
