Was there any sort of time penalty for this? Not saying that there should OR shouldn't be but I'm just wondering if there was?

He did leave the course and could have gotten ahead of the others but it probably was the safest thing to do.

Sometimes the officials look at these things kinda funny, especially when these sports now record time to the thousands of a second.

nope - there was no penality for that. he clearly wasn't trying to cheat, just trying to save himself from going down. the officials said quickly that it was fine.

it was a badass moment though.
