Do you nod ?? or do you just keep going, eyes straight ahead ??

I usually just nod, but I find the situation kinda awkward sometimes.
The real serious looking full-gear "pro-team" types usually don't nod or wave back,
so I don't wave at them. I do at anyone smiling, or making eye contact.
Usually the casualy dressed cyclist seem the most happy.

Just an observation.

i do a nod, and i raise my finger off the brake lever.

same here. sometimes I can't take a hand off the bars, but a nod and waving a couple of my fingers off the handlebar is my usual friendly gesture.

Probably nod if there is not alot of cyclist around around.

Problem is there are alot of cyclist around here. On any weekend ride I could easily pass (from other direction) 100 cyclist. That's alot of nods.

I will get flamed for this but here goes: Hard core roadies, as you've mentioned, are outrageously arrogant. Cycling has always been an elitist activity especially with those on higher end bikes in full team gear. Why the attitude, I have no idea. In 30 years of riding I've had the same observations as you.

Wait until the hard core roadies start to respond. Their answers will be outrageoulsy lame also. I'm too busy to wave. Waving is for loosers. I'm riding too fast. You didn't see me wave because I passed you going so fast etc, etc. That's just the way it is.

If you want to wave and be acknowledged, ride a Harley. At least 90% of the guys I see wave. They also pull up next to you at a stop and talk. Motorcyclists are far more friendly than bicyclists.

I wave. I am lucky to pass a cyclist every 10 miles, so It's nice to see.

I think he means those who are not just on an Xmart Mongoose going for a 1 mile run. Or some 13 year old kids on BMX.

Define serious about the sport? Your bio reads like you are a recreational rider.
Roadies down here seem to be 50/50 between friendly and arrogant, If I am riding a chopper bike about 90% will pretend I don't exist :)

What's wrong with waving to just plain ole people in general? Is a ped or your Xmart guy or BMX kid somehow beneath us and not worthy of a friendly greeting? Perhaps it's not just the 'roadies' who are arrogant if that is the attitude of other 'serious' cyclists.

I don't consider myself a hardcore roadie, but I just have to make the observation: You have an incredible problem with needing approval from strangers. Wave if it makes you feel good, but don't expect everyone else to conform to your expectations.

I usually say good morning or good afternoon as I pass them.

Hey, not every "hard core roadie" is outrageously arrogant and unfriendly, just the other day I was passed by a guy in full Disco time trial gear on a dedicated time trial bike and he waved and said hello.

And yes, I always wave, but I don't get upset when others do not.

I agreee. That's the attitude I find on the road. If you look like them, they might nod, but if you don't look like them, they ignore you.

Nod if we make eye contact. If there are so many bikes passing that I'd be like a bobble-head, I nod at the first and skip the rest.

If it is a lady I do the "tip my hat" move, actually my helmet. I grab the edge of the visor & gently pull down & smile, like gentlemen used to do "back in the day" when it was more common then it is now. This always gets a smile from the ladies

Well for one thing, the guy riding a motorcycle isn't out for a workout. He isn't out of breath. He likely doesn't have a particular destination in mind as motorcycles are toys for most people and not truly a source of transportation. And considering the amount of murderous motorcycle gangs, I really can't say that they are friendlier than cyclists. How many murderous bicycle gangs do you hear about?

I do wave most of the time, but no I won't slow down to raise my hand off the bars if I am pushing hard to get up a hill. Kind of hard to do out of the seat climbing with one hand.

For some of us, getting out of the house to go on a bike ride is an escape. An escape from pressures at home or work. I am an introvert and socializing is a necessary evil not something I seek out. Frankly it is exhausting to have to socialize. If I wanted a friend, I would be out riding with them. Wave if you want, but don't expect the whole world to wave back.

And just because you ride an overpriced steel monstrocity named after a crystal vase, doesn't make you any better than those hard core roadies who ride light and fast bikes that care more about function than style.
