Bike sim .xls - should interest engineers and nerds.

http://w3.iac.net/~curta/bp/BikeSheet.html

This spreadsheet tells you how fast a simulated rider would go given the rider's mass, tires, riding position, power output, and what sort of grade and headwind he faces. Maybe it's been posted before, but even if so, it's worthy of a re-post.

I ran the numbers through for my bike. Given a hypothetical, level, 20 mile route and a rider putting out 200W continuously, I should be able to complete the run on my MTB in 1:12:08.

Switching from my knobbies to semi-slicks improves my time to 1:06:33, a boost from 16.5mph to 18mph.

Weight savings were far less impressive, yielding just 30s per 10lb on gently rolling (1% grade) terrain. I'll put my money elsewhere for now.

Aerodynamically, there's big room for improvement vs. my upright position on my MTB. I could potentailly reach 20mph (instead of 16.5mph) at my 200W level by ditching the backpack and the MTB and getting some spandex pants and drop bars.

Who says it's not about the bike?

p.s. Does anyone have a good estimate of the coefficient of drag and frontal area of a fully faired and non-faired recumbent?
