Hi,
perhaps you could narrow that down a bit. There are racing bikes, racy performance bikes, sporty performance, touring performance, touring, loaded touring,
and a few others. Ya wanna race, get ready to race, go fast and have fun, fast far and fun, really far and fun, or really really really far......I mean, really?

Probably the most popular (and very well respected) are those by Lemond. Check their website. I just bought a new Scapin EOS3 yesterday. Talk to Matt at www.redlanterncycles.com
You can also get at least three models from Serotta. Waterford is the old Schwinn Paramount factory in Waterford, WI and is still owned and operated by Richard Schwinn. Can get a customer ride from www.HHRacingGroup.com (Harry Havnoonian). Probably right about your budget price.
Go up a few hundred and there are at least a hundred small shop custom fabricators in the U.S. Go to the Henry James website and see his listing of the fabricators who use his lug sets. Probably that many again who do not.
Raliegh has a line of steel bikes that have gotten great reviews.
As well as the ones listed by others. Your choices are very wide. If you search this site for Lemonds you find that those who have are very pleased. I would also suggest you search eBay. Steel doesn't wear out under normal use and good maintenance, so don't be afraid of a used steel frameset. A Serotta Colorado III just sold in 55cm for $260. A silly low price. You could build with Campy Record or Dura Ace for that price and still beat $2000.

Hi,
It's more a question of what fits, and what suits you. I am not familiar with all of those, but I doubt there's a dog in the bunch. I didn't get to ride it (snowing here)but the new Specialized Allez cro-mo Elite (I think that's what it's called, has a $1400 list) looked very nice. What have you ridden that you liked? When you test ride the Bianchis, try the Eros.

Custom frames of excellent quality for under $1k--lyonsport.com; this is the website for Jeff Lyon in Grants Pass, OR. Also, his wares are sold by GVH Bikes, an Internet seller of a huge variety of road bikes. His steel offerings include Lyon, Landshark, some Schwinns, and dang near every Italian brand you could want.

The Allez Elite is a great bike for the buck-our area Specialized rep has the pick of the Allez bikes to ride and that's what he's using. Also would second the recommendation of Waterford, though that's getting up in price. They've got great people, great product, and the paint jobs are to die for. If Waterford's models are out of your range, check out the Gunnar Roadie, get it in one of Waterford's colors of the month, and you've got yourself a welded Waterford.

My vote is for the Lemond Zurich... there is a shop in Orange that sells an '03 for $1750.. full ultegra, sweet rims... good to go..
I think it is called Orange City Cycles, near the Orange Circle, if you are familiar with the area Shokhead
Jeff
