Injury Question

I'm not sure if this is the right area in which to post this, but...

I road in my second century a couple of weeks ago (El Tour de Tucson.) There is a short but steep section which I walked up last year, but decided to ride up this year. I didn't feel anything at the time, but within 6-7 miles, it became increasingly difficult to extend my leg all the way. I had increasing pain behind the knee and at the insertion points of my quad on the top of the knee and of the calf muscle on the lateral side of the knee.
I never really thought about getting a riding related knee injury. Does anyone know what how I can prevent a similar injury in the future, or, better yet, what I may have done to my knee this time?

Get a similar problem and mine is down to not extending the leg fully. Easy enough to rectify for me and all I do is put weight on one pedal while standing. Foot at the bottom of the stroke and fully straighten the leg.Pulls on the muscles and is mainly the calf muscle that feels it- 20 seconds later and I have stretched the leg and change to the other leg.

If its not this- then get a check out by a sports physio. They seem to know all the muscular injuries around.

Another relevant thing...I ride a recumbent. But yes, it was quite a grind, all the way up.
