Bike thief sting

Hawaiian police are cracking down on bike theft. I just wish they would do this where I live.

I was just talking about this story yesterday. While the effort is nice, the execution is awfully misguided. The sting was from 7:30am to 1:30pm on a weekday! There's very little criminal activity on campus during those hours. They should have done the sting from 10pm to 2am on a Friday or Saturday night.

Hopefully they'll get it right the next time.

The great advantage of bike stings for the cops is that bikes are predictably stealable. You leave the bike, it gets stolen.
Once you (radio) track the stolen bike to its storage garage it can lead you to a whole lot of other stolen property from house burglaries and muggings. The cops get to solve a mass of open crimes and their statistics look good at the annual review.

When you purchase a bike in Hawaii, you are required to pay a one-time tax (aka bicycle registration fee). It isn't much - I think it's about $15 or so. And they issue the owner a big, ugly sticker that is supposed to be stuck on the frame. If you don't have that sticker on, the police have a right to repossess your bike until you pay the tax or attach the sticker. It's one of those laws that's rarely enforced. I've never attached that ugly sticker to any of my bikes and haven't run into a problem yet.
