panasonic help?

i have a panasonic frame and i'm trying to figure out what year it was made.

there are two numbers stamped on the frame:
under the bottom bracket is 0D17031
and stamped onto the little 'panasonic' metal plate on the headtube is 2040

i've hunted around online for information but haven't found anything.
can anybody help me out?

Fron YellowJersey.org via sheldon brown:

Japanese-built Panasonic/National/Matsu****a frames are of excellent quality at each price range. You can distinguish them from outsourced bikes by the serial number location. Osaka-built frames are serial numbered on the lower headlug. The second digit is the year, e.g., T5M78563 would be a 1985 frame

it didn't have the original seat when i found it; i'm not sure how many of the other components originally came with the bike. but it had diacompe brakes, sugino super maxy cranks, sakae custom road champion handlebars, and (i think?) shimano 600 shifters.

i looked at yellowjersey and sheldon brown, but the problem is that the second digit is a letter, not a number, so my frame doesn't fit in with that description.

I think the answer you got on the C and V forum is correct (1980). I'm not familiar with the serial number format of Panasonics, but the 2040 is likely a date code indicating the bike was assembled at the factory on the 204th day of 1980.
