If you asked cyclists that say, spend more than $300 annually or say, ride more than 3 times a week 8 months of the year if they wear helmets, that's a little better of a marker.
Even better was your original point about observation. Go out and count in various locations.
Different geographical areas yeild different results too.
Don't forget the National Bicycle Dealers Association says,
"Bicycles and related products appeal primarily to a recreation market in the United States. Recent figures cited in an industry trade publication show that 94.5% of those who ride bicycles do so for recreation or fitness. Approximately 75% of bicycle units were sold through the mass merchant channel"
Is it safe to say that your survey here represents the reality of cycling in America? As I posted ealier it's not clear if it is BF members or the general public are the area that is being displayed. Even if it is just BF members, it's just reflecting who responded. Many members might not want to respond and it's possible mostly those who wear helmets, want to respond.
It's just better to include all people who ride bikes, not just some who have a very wonky distinction.
A quick Google shows a report for Nevada
https://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:...&ct=clnk&cd=10
shows the helmet usage rate is 19.2%
I have a report from Tufts University that shows Boston has a rate of 32%
There was a thread
https://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=228016
about riding in NYC that showed a usage rate published @ AMNY of 13%
and here is a Seattle Times article @
https://archives.seattletimes.nwsourc...&date=20030921
that shows, even with an all ages mandatory law, usage @ 50 to 60%

I wear a helmet sometimes. About 50% or the time. I ride nearly 100% or the time on the road.

It's my opinion that your survey doesn't really help understanding about usage rates in any way.

I know that, I'm not concerned about me. It doesn't help any undertanding about the subject, but then again, it's your project. It's a free country.

Personally if I was looking for numbers I might look in a dream book designed for picking the daily number. Just as useful.
