does anyone have a combination that will work better?

Don't know about the SRAM derailleur. Why would you want to replace an Ultegra with a SRAM? Shimano's derailleurs are a great buy for the money unlike their brifters. Just build the bike with 105, it's a lot of bang for the buck.

No. SRAM rear derailleurs need SRAM shifters to work. The amount of cable pull is different.

Actually, the post you quoted was 100% true. If the OP wishes to run that combo he will definitely need the shiftmate for Sram/Shimano, no may about it.

In the post I quoted, Thor answered "No" to the question "will these parks work together and will they work well?" I said (correctly) this was not true because they indeed will work together with a ShiftMate.
