it's about get'n the job done of protecting the only pair of eyes you'll ever have. No matter how
much money you spend on 'fashion wear' glasses you will get more bang for the buck with "fit overs'.

Unless you also value safety (yours, and the other cyclists you may be riding with).

I wore a pair of Solar Shields over my regular glasses for most of last year. They did a wonderful job of blocking wind, blocking glare...and blocking all my peripheral vision, to the point where it was actually dangerous. Checking for cars or fellow riders over your shoulder? Sorry, a quick turn of the head to the left doesn't cut it when you've got "fit-overs", you need to turn your head nearly a complete 180° to see approaching traffic.

When I eventually got contact lenses & typical wraparound cycling glasses it was like a revelation; suddenly I could see my co-riders, and I could see approaching traffic all around me. I would *never* recommend "fit-overs" for cycling. Hang gliding, sure. Rock climbing, sure. Anything where you're in close proximity to moving objects coming from any potential direction, no freakin' way.

so glad i found this thread.

i am interested in buying prescription sunglasses for biking, as my current glasses are just too small (fashionable but not functional).

I was hoping to get this done this weekend.

My question: Can I get these type of special glasses at my local shop (Pearle Vision, for example) or do I need to go someplace that caters to biking OR order online?

thanks

I looked at places like Pearl Vision and their choices were too narrow for my needs. I wanted full wrap around glasses that could accomodate a bifocal. Most of their glasses with full wraparound capability were single vision. Even many of the companies who can deal with bifocals had limits in how strong the prescription could be. That really narrowed the field for me. From the feedback to this thread, it appears that there more options available to me than I initially discovered. However, I did not discover all those options because few of the local eyeglass shops had anything close to what I wanted. Some of the options noted in this thread may only be available via mail order...not any local shop in your area.
Bottom line....do a lot of research before you write a check.

What style are your Oakleys? I have been looking for Rx sunglasses for some time (contacts no longer work for me and nobody is getting close to my eyes with a laser or other implement) and I really like the Oakley "Half Jackets" I can get a pair and two sets of lenses thru my insurance. Anyone tried these?

I have had a pair of bolle with the prescription lens that fits behind the wrap around lens. This saves $$ for when the prescription needs changing and it does work well for me...i have to use bifocals or (what I prefer and use) progressive lenses. they're a bit heavier than oakley but they also have that extra "set" of lenses. This setup also allows me to use the various sun block lenses, e.g., for cloudy days, for clear and bright and for dark days (clear front lenses).

I tried my Adidas on a day ride and in the car and really like them. You do notice the outside edge of the prescription insert when you first put them on. It is a little distracting. I am anxious to try my yellow lenses on a night ride. It might be awhile as winter has finally come to Indiana and it has been too slick to ride.
