just saw the kryptonite thread and i though i'd share this.

bear in mind that most of these chains cost over £100 and are sold with "sold secure and thatcham testing stating that they will withstand a 20 minute attck".

I guess the simple solution would be to lock up your bike so the chain is off the ground. That way they can't use the ground for leverage.

It's not too smart to be breaking those chains w/o safety glasses!

BTW, what language are they speaking? :)

Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit chain was toast in 30 seconds with bolt cutters. Kryptonitelock would you care to respond?

Of course one of these and the right blade and no lock whatsoever will be of any use.

I strongly suspect that someone hanging around at a bike rack with bolt cutters a meter long will attract some attention... or just walking around.

Then again, wWith the bikes I ride, a thief would be on the losing end if he dropped the bolt cutters while riding the bike away. :D

No they won't. No one gives a rats ass. Or rather no one would bother even trying to stop someone like that.

Trust me. The general level of apathy around here is so high that locking in high traffic areas gains you exactly ZERO security over anywhere else.

my point is that it's not difficult for somebody to drive up in a van, with a pair of bolt croppers, and have your bike away in less than a minute.
The lock being off the ground is irrelevent when using bolt croppers. did you not see the method used in the vid.

This is why I personally haul a good U-lock with me, and leave the chain locked on the rack I lock the bike up at home [1]. I wonder how a good U-lock will fare in this test... but U-locks have a different attack method.

Depending on the area of Austin, public view of a bike may help, may be absolutely useless. One area of town, a thief can be happily crunching locks off and absolutely nobody will care. Go to another college in town, and the police department will demand a very good explaination from someone merely carrying bolt cutters on campus in 30-60 seconds.

I watched the video, but the kicker video was after this film ended.

Called "Bike Thief", the guy pretended to steal his own bike to see if anyone would intervene. Only one person did and that was to suggest a better way. He used bolt cutters, a grinding tool, a hacksaw, and a hammer. A police van drove right past him and did nothing but tell the photographer to move along.

Yes, I watched the clip. They used the ground for leverage on all the locks they cut. Full body weight and the ground as leverage....

Interesting way it was carried out, with probably the largest bolt cutters I've ever seen. However the statement at the end was the best part. "IQ 18 Films is prepared to state the above in a court of law"

I used to be blessed with a pair of titanium collapsible bolt cutters, folded down to about 4"x14" or so and setup in seconds. easily concealed, so thats out the window.

So what it comes down to is with the right tool any chain or cable can be cut.
So why bother to lock a bike at all. I don't:D :D
