hey everyone

thanks for reading this - i am turning to this board for some help

i have always loved riding bikes, but keep buying crap 250-300 dollar ones

i recently moved to asheville and feel the time is right to buy a better bike - something in the 500-600 range.

there are a slew of bike shops around...here's what seems like the most helpful stuff to tell you:

i am 31, 5'6" and 140ish

i plan on using my bike to commute 2 miles on roads to work everyday, as well as around my neighborhood, all of which have lots of hills

i would like to be able to take it out on trails and not have to worry about it falling apart - i don't know if i'll be tearing up jumps and whatnot, but hours and miles in the woods sounds real good

so i know i don't want a road bike

i have the opportunity to buy this bike -

*Wheelset* Rear-XT silent hub (disc)- sun mammoth rim-stainless spokes
Maxxis MOFO DH downhill tires

Avid Frt disc
Sram v-brake rear
Odyssey Pedals
Raceface Chainring guard

Great condition! needs a new cassette ($20-60) depending on the quality you get. Fits riders 5'6 to 5'10, this bike was ridden a total of 15 times after it was built up... the rest of the
----

for 500 dollars

i rode it today and it seems like it is in good shape, but i am pretty ignorant so i don't really know if it is worth the money for what i want to do

should i buy this bike - i took it to a shop while riding and the guy said it was "too much bike" and i should buy his avalanche 2.0 or cannondale f-5 instead. another shop steered me toward a felt q620 or haro v4

and another shop has the gary fisher marlin, trek 4500 and specialized rockhopper - from my research these seem to be the predominant "decent" bikes in my price range

thoughts?

THANKS!

Make sure you have provisions to add fenders, lights, and a rack. Those are important to commuting. Or, look for those items in a new bike. Kona has the Dew. I love my Breezer--there are others versions, too.

One thing...if the Kona needs a rear cassette because it's worn out.....it's a pretty good bet that it needs a chain as well.

+1 on the ablility to add at least a rear fender and possibly a rack for commuting. having the ability to carry a change of clothes of other items to and from work would be something you'd want I think.
